As this year marks the centennial of the beginning of the Civil War, this fact is being commemorated with several exhibits throughout the State, but most of all paying tribute to the first Rhode Island Volunteers who rushed to the defense of the City of Washington, putting at the disposal of President Lincoln the only fully equipped and best trained regiment at this time.

Abraham Lincoln ( February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865 ) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865.

On foreign and military policy, Lincoln spoke out against the Mexican – American War, which he attributed to President Polk's desire for " military glory — that attractive rainbow, that rises in showers of blood ".

President Buchanan and President-elect Lincoln refused to recognize the Confederacy, declaring secession illegal.

President Lincoln rejected two geographically limited emancipation attempts by Major General John C. Frémont in August 1861 and by Major General David Hunter in May 1862, on the grounds that it was not within their power, and it would upset the border states loyal to the Union.

Nevertheless, Lincoln was concerned that Grant might be considering a candidacy for President in 1864, as McClellan was.

Confederate Vice President Stephens led a group to meet with Lincoln, Seward, and others at Hampton Roads.

While in Washington, Doubleday remained a loyal Republican and staunch supporter of President Abraham Lincoln.

* 1865 – Union cavalry troopers corner and shoot dead John Wilkes Booth, assassin of President Lincoln, in Virginia.

In his journal for November 6, 1860, he wrote: " At Town House, and cast my vote for Lincoln and the Republican candidates generally — the first vote I ever cast for a President and State officers.

As Vice President of the United States in 1865, he succeeded Abraham Lincoln following his assassination.

On April 14, 1865, President Lincoln was shot and mortally wounded by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer, who conspired to coordinate assassinations of others, including Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant and Secretary of State William H. Seward that same night.

Prodded by President Abraham Lincoln, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker moved his army in pursuit, but was relieved just three days before the battle and replaced by Meade.

That November, President Lincoln used the dedication ceremony for the Gettysburg National Cemetery to honor the fallen Union soldiers and redefine the purpose of the war in his historic Gettysburg Address.

Chiang was reelected by the National Assembly to be the President of the Republic of China ( ROC ) on May 20, 1954, and again in 1960, 1966, and 1972.

President Truman, symbolizing a broad based desire for an Eisenhower candidacy for president, again in 1951 pressed him to run for the office as a Democrat.

Later, President Bush ’ s hat was changed to a Roman military helmet ( again, atop an asterisk ) representing imperialism.

The title was briefly revived from 12 December 1915 to 22 March 1916 by President Yuan Shikai and again in early July 1917 when General Zhang Xun attempted to restore last Qing emperor Puyi to the throne.

In February he again wrote for his support, this time for the office of President of Wales.

Seven people were killed in the coup, although Ríos Montt survived to found a political party ( the Guatemalan Republic Front ) and to be elected President of Congress in 1995 and again in 2000.

Former President Viera was once again elected as President in July 2005.

During these disorders, the Council of State still assembled at the usual place and the " Lord President Bradshaw John Bradshaw ( judge ), who was present, though by long sickness very weak and much extenuated, yet animated by his ardent zeal and constant affection to the common cause, upon hearing Col Syndenham's justifications of the proceedings of the army in again disrupting parliament, stood up and interrupted him, declaring his abhorrence of that detestable action, and telling the council, that being now going to his God, he had not patience to sit there to hear his great name so openly blasphemed ; and thereupon departed to his lodgings, and withdrew himself from public employment.

President Olusegun Obasanjo in August 2003 committed Nigerian troops once again into Liberia, at the urging of the United States, to provide an interim presence until the United Nations Mission in Liberia ( UNMIL ) arrived.

In 2004 and again in 2006, Chinese President Hu Jintao made state visits to Nigeria and addressed a joint session of the National Assembly of Nigeria.

The next effort by any government to set aside such protected lands was, again, in the United States, when President Abraham Lincoln signed an Act of Congress on June 30, 1864, ceding the Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias ( later becoming the Yosemite National Park ) to the state of California:

In the 1980s, a popular movement for nuclear disarmament again gained strength in the light of the weapons build-up and aggressive rhetoric of US President Ronald Reagan.

In many nations the President is also the Commander-in-Chief of the nation's armed forces, though once again this can range from a ceremonial role to one with considerable authority.

This transfer of power may occur for any reason the president considers appropriate ; in 2002 and again in 2007, President George W. Bush briefly transferred presidential authority to Vice President Dick Cheney.
