It was in this reign that an important change in the government of the Danubian Principalities was introduced: previously, the Porte had appointed Hospodars, usually native Moldavian and Wallachian boyars, to administer those provinces ; after the Russian campaign of 1711, during which Peter the Great found an ally in Moldavia Prince Dimitrie Cantemir, the Porte began overtly deputizing Phanariote Greeks in that region, and extended the system to Wallachia after Prince Stefan Cantacuzino established links with Eugene of Savoy.

The tactic proved unsuccessful, but when Tallard arrived to bolster the Elector's army, and Prince Eugene arrived with reinforcements for the Allies, the two armies finally met on the banks of the Danube in and around the small village of Blindheim.

On 10 June, the Duke met for the first time the President of the Imperial War Council, Prince Eugene – accompanied by Count Wratislaw – at the village of Mundelsheim, half-way between the Danube and the Rhine.

But this destruction, coupled with a protracted siege of Rain ( 9 – 16 July ), caused Prince Eugene to lament "... since the Donauwörth action I cannot admire their performances ", and later to conclude " If he has to go home without having achieved his objective, he will certainly be ruined.

Prince Eugene was expected to be in position by 11: 00, but due to the difficult terrain and enemy fire, progress was slow.

At 13: 00, Cutts was ordered to attack the village of Blenheim whilst Prince Eugene was requested to assault Lutzingen on the Allied right flank.

Prince Eugene and the Imperial troops had been repulsed three times – driven right back to the woods – and had taken a real drubbing.

Ten infantry colours were lost to the Bavarians, and hundreds of prisoners taken ; it was only through the leadership of Eugene and the Prussian Prince that the Imperialist infantry were prevented from abandoning the field.

" It was a hard-fought contest, leading Prince Eugene to observe – " I have not a squadron or battalion which did not charge four times at least.

Trier was taken on 26 October and Landau fell on 23 November to the Margrave of Baden and Prince Eugene ; with the fall of Trarbach on 20 December, the campaign season for 1704 came to an end.

This was in part due to the sudden switching of troops from the Rhine to reinforce Prince Eugene in Italy, and part due to the deterioration of Baden ’ s health brought on by the re-opening of a severe foot wound he had received at the storming of the Schellenberg the previous year.

The first option ( although it is debatable to what extent the Duke was committed to such an enterprise ) was a plan to transfer his forces from the Spanish Netherlands to northern Italy ; once there, he intended linking up with Prince Eugene in order to defeat the French and safeguard Savoy from being overrun.

Further good news for the Allies arrived from northern Italy where, on 7 September, Prince Eugene had routed a French army before the Piedmontese capital, Turin, driving the Franco-Spanish forces from northern Italy.

Prince Eugene was born in the Hôtel de Soissons in Paris on 18 October 1663.

Yet to her great disappointment her chance to become queen passed by, and in 1657 Olympia married Eugene Maurice, Count of Soissons, Count of Dreux, and Prince of Savoy.

Whatever the truth Olympia, rather than face trial, subsequently fled France for Brussels in January 1680, leaving Eugene in the care of his father's mother, Marie de Bourbon, and her daughter, Hereditary Princess of Baden, mother of Prince Louis of Baden.

Confident and self-assured the Prince of Savoy ( ably assisted by Commercy and Guido Starhemberg ) set about restoring order and discipline.

Sullivan had one installed as well, and on 13 May 1883, at a party to celebrate the composer's 41st birthday, the guests, including the Prince of Wales ( later Edward VII ), heard a direct relay of parts of Iolanthe from the Savoy.

The allied forces were led by John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, and by Prince Eugene of Savoy.

After three weeks at the Savoy, Journey's End transferred to the Prince of Wales Theatre, where it ran for the next two years.

While the aging Prince Eugene of Savoy had recommended to the emperor a more warlike posture against potential actions by France in the Rhine valley and northern Italy, only minimal steps were taken to improve imperial defenses on the Rhine.

In the spring of 1734 French maneuvers successfully flanked this line, and Prince Eugene of Savoy ( who, despite being a Savoyard, fought on the Austrian side ) was forced to withdraw these forces to the imperial encampment at Heilbronn.

It was marked by the military leadership of notable generals including the Duc de Villars, the Jacobite Duke of Berwick, the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy.

Armed conflict began slowly, as Austrian forces under Prince Eugene of Savoy invaded the Duchy of Milan, one of the Spanish territories in Italy, prompting French intervention.

Prince Eugene also met with success ; in September, following the departure of Vendôme to shore up the shattered army in the Netherlands, he and the Duke of Savoy inflicted a heavy loss on the French under Orleans and Marsin at the Battle of Turin, driving them out of Italy by the end of the year.

Though Catherine was vexed at the number of French officers streaming to the Turkish standard, there were several under her own, such as the Prince De Nassau ; ;

The Spanish parliament chose amongst several candidates, including a French Prince, which led to the Franco-Prussian War, when Bismarck refused to have another Frenchman in the Spanish Throne.

Count Horn directed the Prince of Holstein-Beck to take the village, but his two Dutch brigades were cut down by the French and Irish troops, capturing and badly wounding the Prince during the action.

The name " Quinte " is derived from " Kente ", which was the name of an early French Catholic mission located on the south shore of what is now Prince Edward County.

Combat was hard, but the Black Prince still had a mobile reserve hidden in the woods, which was able to circle around and attack the French in the flank and rear.

# Maria Paola or Marie Pauline Bonaparte ( 1780 – 1825 ), married in 1797 to French general Charles Leclerc and later married Prince Camillo Borghese.

In addition to Cape Breton Island, the French colony of Île Royale also included Île St .- Jean ( today called Prince Edward Island ).

The Battle of Muret was a massive step in the creation of the unified French kingdom and the country we know today — although Edward III, the Black Prince and Henry V would threaten later to shake these foundations.

Napoleon III, nephew of Napoleon I, returned from exile in the United Kingdom in 1848 to be elected to the French parliament, and then as " Prince President " in a coup d ' état elected himself Emperor, a move approved later by a large majority of the French electorate.

When Prussia tried to put a Hohenzollern candidate, Prince Leopold, on the Spanish throne, the French angrily protested.

In 1782, during the American Revolutionary War, a French squadron under Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse captured and demolished York Factory and Prince of Wales Fort.

Because he had sealed under duress, however, John received approval from the Pope to break his word as soon as hostilities had ceased, provoking the First Barons ' War and an invited French invasion by Prince Louis of France ( whom the majority of the English barons had invited to replace John on the throne and had him proclaimed king in London in May 1216 ).

Prince Louis ( the future Louis VIII, reigned 1223 – 1226 ) was involved in the subsequent English civil war as French and English ( or rather Anglo-Norman ) aristocracies were once one and were now split between allegiances.

The next closest possible alternative was Prince Louis of France, but as the husband of Henry II's granddaughter, his claim was tenuous, and the English had been at war with the French for thirty years.
