Prince Norodom Ranariddh's FUNCINPEC Party was the top vote recipient with 45. 5 % vote followed by Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party and the Buddhist Liberal Democratic Party, respectively.

Among the very few who attempted to look at evidence from both sides at the time were Australian ambassador to Cambodia Tony Kevin, and journalist Barry Wain, who wrote, " in circumstances that remain disputed, Mr. Hun Sen's military forces ... defeated Prince Ranariddh's troops in Phnom Penh ".

These differences came to a head in July 1997 when Rannaridh was ousted by Hun Sen in a bloody coup d ' état which saw some of Prince Ranariddh's supporters being killed, and his house looted.

Nicknamed “ The Red Prince ”, he became the figurehead leader of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, and upon its successful seizure of power in 1975, he became the first President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic ( and President of the Supreme People's Assembly ), a position which he held until his retirement in 1986.

Descendants of the Eight Elders who have benefited significantly from nepotism and cronyism constitute a group now known as " the Princelings " or the " Crown Prince Party ".

The Princelings, also translated as the Crown Prince Party, are the descendants of prominent and influential senior communist officials in the People's Republic of China.

Most political observers see the Crown Prince Party as having been at the pinnacle of their power in the 1980s and to have had their power reduced after 1989 for a number of reasons:
