: Pythagoras ( 582-496 BC )

The practical side of philosophy was introduced by Pythagoras of Samos ( 582-496 BCE ).

The earliest records of the study of this phenomenon are attributed to the philosopher Pythagoras in the 6th century BC.

In the 6th century BC, the ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras wanted to know why some musical intervals seemed more beautiful than others, and he found answers in terms of numerical ratios representing the harmonic overtone series on a string.

In the 6th century BC, " Pythagoras himself established a small community that set a premium on study, vegetarianism, and sexual restraint or abstinence.

The paradigm of a spherical Earth was developed in Greek astronomy, beginning with Pythagoras ( 6th century BC ), although most Pre-Socratics retained the flat Earth model.

Some ancient authorities in the doxographic tradition credited the Greek philosophers Pythagoras, in the 6th century BC, and Parmenides, in the 5th, with recognizing that the Earth is spherical.

Greeks settled heavily along the coast at an early date and several of their settlements, including the first Italian city called Rhegion ( Reggio Calabria ), and the next ones Sybaris, Kroton ( Crotone ), a settlement where the mathematician Pythagoras later resided, and Locri, were numbered among the leading cities of Magna Graecia during the 6th and 5th centuries BC.

The systematic study of this seems to have begun with the school of Pythagoras in the late sixth century BC.

Neopythagoreanism was a revival in the 2nd century BC — 2nd century AD period of various ideas traditionally associated with the followers of Pythagoras, the Pythagoreans.

A full description of the origins of the free market economics dating as far back to the conception of natural laws as mathematical, eternal and absolute — a reflection of some perfect mathematical form — derived from ancient Greek philosophers Pythagoras ( 569 – 500 BC ) and Plato, and reinvigorated by the Enlightenment is well beyond the scope of this article, but can be read on Chapter 4, A Brief Account of the Historical Origins of Economic Fundamentalism, in Dr. Lee Boldman's book ( 2007 ).

He may have lived in the late 5th century BC, about a century after the time of Pythagoras.

In the area of cosmology there is less agreement about what Pythagoras himself actually taught, but most scholars believe that the Pythagorean idea of the transmigration of the soul is too central to have been added by a later follower of Pythagoras.

He put Pythagoras, “ a man of distinction ,” in charge of Miletus and set sail for Thrace, where he attempted to establish a colony on the Strymon river, at the same site as the later Athenian colony of Amphipolis.

Thinkers and teachers like the Buddha, Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides, and Anaxagoras contributed to such awakenings which Plato would later call anamnesis, or a remembering of things forgotten.

In this system we distinguish not only the asceticism of Pythagoras and the later mysticism of Plato, but also the influence of the Orphic mysteries.

It was much later when Cicero and other Greek philosophers / mathematicians / historians decided to tell the world that it was Pythagoras that came up with this theorem!

In fact, later on many historians have tried to prove the relation between Pythagoras theorem and Pythagoras but have failed miserably.

Distinguishing the work of Thales and Pythagoras from that of later and earlier mathematicians is difficult since none of their original works survives, except for possibly the surviving " Thales-fragments ", which are of disputed reliability.

Although Alcmaeon is often called a pupil of Pythagoras, there is great reason to doubt whether he was a Pythagorean at all ; his name seems to have crept into lists of Pythagoreans given us by later writers.

In about 1924 it became known as the Rosicrucian Order Crotona Fellowship ( Crotona was the site of Pythagoras ’ s school in southern Italy ).

One of the first attempts to implement such a political system was perhaps Pythagoras ' " city of the wise " that he planned to build in Italy together with his followers, the order of " mathematikoi.

Of these, the most notable is the Cave of Pythagoras on the eastern slope, in which Pythagoras is reputed to have hidden from the tyrant Polycrates prior to going into exile in Italy.

On July 4, 1883, twenty-eight word puzzlers, mostly young men, met at Pythagoras Hall in New York City and founded the Eastern Puzzlers ' League ; they then celebrated the event by paying a penny each to walk across the newly dedicated Brooklyn Bridge.

If we consider measuring distance based on Pythagoras ' Theorem then it is clear that we shall be adding quantities measured in different units, and so this leads to meaningless results.

Many historians have also presented evidence for the fact that Pythagoras actually travelled to Egypt and then India and learned many important mathematical theories ( including Pythagoras theorem ) that western world didn ’ t know of back then!

Boyle then covers the history of counting in detail, starting with when numbers were considered to be divine and were the exclusive domain of the accountant-priests of the Assyrian Empire, then going on to Pythagoras and the Ancient Greeks who believed numbers represented the harmony of nature.

Like Thales, Pythagoras also traveled to Egypt and Babylon, then under the rule of Nebuchadnezzar, but settled in Croton, Magna Graecia.
