This was known as Butskellism, after the almost identical Keynesian policies of Rab Butler on behalf of the Conservatives, and Hugh Gaitskell for Labour.

Though he voted for the Labour Party in their 1945 landslide victory, because he wanted to punish the Conservative Party for the Munich agreement, after the war he joined the Conservatives and worked for the Conservative Research Department under Rab Butler, where his colleagues included Iain Macleod and Reginald Maudling.

The social and economic policies of the consensus appealed to the paternalism of one nation conservatism because they appeared to provide prosperity and alleviate social problems such as poverty and disease ; this was intellectually developed by the ' new conservatism ' movement, led by Rab Butler.

Rab Butler held the post in 1962 / 63 under Harold Macmillan, but was passed over for the premiership in favour of Alec Douglas-Home.

With his mentor Rab Butler as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Maudling worked to reduce taxes and controls in order to move from post-war austerity to affluence.

The Rab Butler Building

The Rab Butler building was opened in 1991 as the headquarters for the British Household Panel Survey.

* The Dosser portrayed by Russell Hunter from ' Ethics ': A tramp who attempts to kill himself by jumping into the River Clyde within sight of Rab, who rescues him.

The Dosser then blackmails Rab into taking care of him by threatening to commit suicide if he doesn't.

In the end, Rab hires a hitman to get rid of him but attempts to call him off when he discovers that the whole thing is a scam.

* The Hitman portrayed by Freddie Boardley from ' Ethics ': A hitman hired by Rab to do away with the tramp who is conning him.

Appears to have made his career choice by reasons of enjoyment rather than necessity, as when Rab asks him to desist from the murder but keep the money he responds " keep the money, I'll just dae the malky anyway!

" In response Rab hits him over the head with a trashcan cover, and he falls into the river, sinking from sight ; this prompts Rab to say " An ' I always thought shite floated.

* The Heebie Jeebie voiced by the late Russell Hunter from ' Drink ': is a pink elephant that only Rab can see ( Cotter can see it at the end of the episode ) it trys to convince him not to give up drinking.

But the most important work of Amram, which marks him as one of the most prominent of the geonim before Saadia, is his " Prayer-book ," the so-called " Siddur Rab Amram.
