This set of recordings has never been out of print, and is considered by many to be the touchstone of Beethoven sonata interpretations, though shortcomings in finger technique mar many performances of fast movements ( Sergei Rachmaninoff is supposed to have referred to him as " the great adagio pianist ").

Rachmaninoff explained to von Riesemann, " It was not so much his magnificent technique that held one spellbound as the profound, spiritually refined musicianship, which spoke from every note and every bar he played and singled him out as the most original and unequalled pianist in the world.

He always claimed that the reason for his continued absence from Russia was " ill health "; this enabled him to remain a respected composer in the Soviet Union, unlike Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff, who had left for other reasons.

Sergei Rachmaninoff was engaged in writing a 2-piano reduction of his Piano Concerto No. 4, containing his final revisions, when death overtook him.

Before studying with Hofmann, however, Cherkassky auditioned for Sergei Rachmaninoff, who advised him to give up performing for at least two years and to change the position of his hands at the keyboard.

Sergei Rachmaninoff held him in very great esteem, and considered him one of his most important influences.

Critics ( e. g. Harold C. Schonberg ) and colleagues ( e. g. Sergei Rachmaninoff ) alike placed him among the supreme piano virtuosi of his day, alongside Leopold Godowsky, Moriz Rosenthal, Josef Hofmann and Josef Lhévinne.

In 1979, at the first peak of Gavrilov's career, Herbert von Karajan, who had heard him in Tchaikovsky's First concerto in Berlin, offered recordings of all the Rachmaninoff concertos, despite the fact that Karajan only rarely conducted them.

Harrison mentions that Rachmaninoff was concerned and tried talking to him during breaks in the rehearsal but to no effect.

" Rachmaninoff was obviously very concerned and in the pauses went to Glazunov and said something to him, but he never managed to arouse him from a state of complete indifference.

What Rachmaninoff heard around him proved that politics was not the only thing that had changed since the October Revolution.

" The pianist Josef Hofmann, another friend to whom Rachmaninoff showed the score, also encouraged him.

Bortkiewicz's piano style was very much based on Liszt and Chopin, nurtured by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, early Scriabin, Wagner and Russian folklore.

( Rachmaninoff admired Friedman's playing but may have opined that he " played too much to the gallery.

While Rachmaninoff did have a habit of relaxing into a slower tempo with the second subject of his first movement ( a habit at which, Simpson claimed, Rachmaninoff became much worse later in his career ), he kept a firm grip on the corresponding material in this work.

Rachmaninoff had composed intensely during much of his career in Russia.

In Dresden, where he had done much composing in the past, Rachmaninoff began to think specifically about composing again.

" In a letter from November 1910 to the editor of Utro Rossii, the publication which supposedly quoted the above remarks and which attributes them to Rachmaninoff, the composer categorically denies the quotation and wrote " The article publishes without my knowledge words of mine about the Bolshoi Theater and Chaliapin ... I said that we often have regrettable confusion backstage at the Bolshoi Theater ... I also said that I had heard rumors that since Chaliapin had been appointed régisseur of those operas in which he sings, there is more quiet backstage.

He enjoyed fully using his vast talents, for example wanting to record the complete works for piano of Rachmaninoff ( which constitute about 6-full length CDs ).

Rachmaninoff added that neither Arensky nor fellow-professor Sergei Taneyev was enthusiastic about the work, perhaps because of its lack of individuality.

However, Rachmaninoff also writes extensively about his impression of the symphony itself:

" Medtner replied five days later that he could not agree with Rachmaninoff about the concerto being too long, or about his general attitude about length.

Pianists Vladimir Ashkenazy, Leslie Howard and Yevgeny Sudbin, and biographer Max Harrison, have argued that, as with his Second Piano Sonata, Rachmaninoff got everything about the Fourth Concerto right the first time.

Though Rachmaninoff talked about revisiting the Fourth Concerto after finishing the Third Symphony, he put off going over the score until 1941, 15 years after initially completing it.

In the words of Harold Charles Schonberg: " His tone was like the morning stars singing together, his technique was flawless even if measured against the fingers of Hofmann and Rachmaninoff, and his musicianship was sensitive.

In the 20th century the traditions of Russian opera were developed by many composers including Sergei Rachmaninoff in his works The Miserly Knight and Francesca da Rimini, Igor Stravinsky in Le Rossignol, Mavra, Oedipus rex, and The Rake's Progress, Sergei Prokofiev in The Gambler, The Love for Three Oranges, The Fiery Angel, Betrothal in a Monastery, and War and Peace ; as well as Dmitri Shostakovich in The Nose and Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, Edison Denisov in L ' écume des jours, and Alfred Schnittke in Life with an Idiot and Historia von D.
