The company went through many changes, including a buyout, between its founding to 1905 when founder Ransom E. Olds started his new company REO Motor Car Company, which would last in Lansing for another 70 years.

They named the band REO Speedwagon, from the REO Speed Wagon, a flatbed truck Doughty had studied in transportation history, and the initials are those of its founder Ransom E. Olds.

Oldsmar's history dates to 1913 when automobile pioneer Ransom E. Olds purchased of land by the northern part of Tampa Bay to establish " R. E. Olds-on-the-Bay ".

Ransom has few peers among 20th century American university teachers of humanities ; his distinguished students included Donald Davidson, Randall Jarrell, Robert Lowell, Andrew Lytle, Allen Tate, Peter Taylor, Robie Macauley, Robert Penn Warren, E. L. Doctorow, Cleanth Brooks, Richard M. Weaver, and Constantinos Patrides ( himself a Rhodes Scholar, who dedicated his monograph on John Milton's Lycidas to Ransom's memory ).

One of the chief " car men " and organizer of the company was Roy D. Chapin, Sr., a young executive who had worked with Ransom E. Olds.

Thomas E. G. Ransom commanded the XIII Corps during the engagement, while the XIX Corps was commanded by William B. Franklin.

In August, 1874, he was chosen a director to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of the late Ransom E. Wood, who was going to Europe with his family.
