Among the latter was a former federal police corporal, José López Rega, who was the founder of the Alianza Anticomunista Argentina (" Triple A ") death squads, which had organized the massacre.

In the government the more radically right-wing factions quickly took control ; Isabel Perón, President since Juan Perón's death, was essentially a figurehead under the influence of Rega.

Emilio Massera, who was part of the military junta led by Jorge Rafael Videla from 1976 to 1978, José López Rega, minister of Social Welfare in Perón's government and founder of the Argentine Anticommunist Alliance (" Triple A "), and General Guillermo Suárez Mason were also members.

Another source of contention between her and the voters was the increasing appearance that José López Rega, the Minister of Social Welfare, set the agenda over a broad swath of Perón's policies.

The Ezeiza massacre, organized by López Rega on the day of Perón's return from a 20-year exile, led to a definitive split between left and right-wing Peronism, with Cámpora as representative of the left-wing and López Rega as representative of the right-wing.

When Perón died on July 1, 1974, Isabel assumed power and López Rega almost became her Prime minister, assuming the direction of all ministers in the Presidency's orbit.

Although Juan Perón encouraged the actions of José López Rega, supported the right-wing unionists and denied preferential promotions to the Montoneros, they thought that his actions were simply a strategic masquerade, and that he actually supported the Montoneros ' projects.
