# Abijah ( king ) of the Kingdom of Judah, also known as Abijam ( אבים ' aḄiYaM " My Father is Yam "), who was son of Rehoboam and succeeded him on the throne of Judah.

As a consequence of Solomon's failure to stamp out the worship of gods other than Yahweh, the kingdom of David is split in two in the reign of his own son Rehoboam, who becomes the first to reign over the kingdom of Judah.

His reign is described in and and in In the Hebrew Bible, Rehoboam was 41 years old when he ascended the throne.

The older men counseled Rehoboam at least to speak to the people in a civil manner ( it is not clear whether they counseled him to accept the demands ).

Yet Solomon sins by allowing his foreign wives to worship their own gods, and so on his death and reign of his son, Rehoboam, the kingdom is divided in two.

The kings who follow Rehoboam in Jerusalem continue the royal line of David ( i. e., they inherit the promise to David ); in the north, however, dynasties follow each other in rapid succession, and the kings are uniformly bad ( meaning that they fail to follow Yahweh alone ).

The Tribes of Judah and Benjamin remained loyal to Rehoboam, and reformed the Kingdom of Judah, while the other entity continuing to be called the Kingdom of Israel, or just Israel.

However, on the succession of Solomon's son, Rehoboam, in c. 930 BCE the country split into two kingdoms: Israel ( including the cities of Shechem and Samaria ) in the north and Judah ( containing Jerusalem ) in the south.

Under Rehoboam, Lachish became the second most important city of the kingdom of Judah.
