Belzec, Polish spelling Bełżec, was the first of the Nazi German extermination camps created for implementing Operation Reinhard during the Holocaust.

Belzec extermination camp, the model for two others in the Aktion Reinhard murder program, started as a labor camp in April 1940, in the course of the Burggraben-project attached to the Lublin reservation in the same area: the reservation was to serve as a pool for forced labour exploited by various small camps like Belzec, to erect defensive works along the German Nazi-Soviet demarcation line such as a long anti-tank ditch.

Before Operation Reinhard, over half a million Jews had been killed by the Einsatzgruppen, mobile extermination units, in territories conquered by the German army.

During Operation Reinhard ( 1941-43 ), an undetermined number of Roma were also killed in the extermination camps, such as Treblinka. The Nazi persecution of Roma varied from country to country and region to region.

Of these, four were extermination camps, where all new-arrivals were simply killed – the " Aktion Reinhard " camps ( Treblinka, Sobibor and Belzec ), together with Chelmno.

* In the Robert Harris novel Fatherland, set in a parallel history where Germany won the Second World War, Reinhard Heydrich is depicted as having been promoted to the rank of the Reichsführer-SS, after Himmler was mysteriously killed in a plane crash in 1962.

Despite its declared condemnation of pogroms in April 1941, when German official Reinhard Heydrich requested " self-cleansing actions " in June of that year the OUN organized militias who killed several thousand Jews in western Ukraine soon afterward that year.

It is uncertain who first realized that the deportees were being sent to Chełmno, the first of the Operation Reinhard death camps, where they were killed with carbon monoxide fumes in gas vans ( gas chambers had not yet been built ).
