Retail, service, and manufacturing jobs employ most of the city's residents.

Due to poor sales Debenhams Retail ( Ireland ) announced in January 2010 that it would slash 170 jobs within its Republic of Ireland stores.

A retail park near the town centre, Eastgate Retail Park, has stores such as Home Bargains, United Carpets Woodfloor & Beds, Morrisons ( formley Netto ) and Poundstretcher.

Other developments near the town centre include a new Tesco Extra ( the second in the area ), the Victoria Mills Retail Park which is home to several chain stores including Next and a B & Q Depot off the Peaks Parkway A16.

Early 2000 saw the opening of a new art gallery in the northwest of the town centre near Wolverhampton Street, along with the new Crown Wharf Retail Park shortly afterwards.

Retail parks, such as the Hathaway Retail Park, are located on the edge of town containing larger superstores and fast-food outlets, including a McDonalds and a small Burger King.

In more recent years, the Three Lakes Retail Park has opened on the outskirts of town and continues to expand with more developments under construction.

The furniture store Haskins, which originated in Shepton Mallet in 1938, has its principal showroom in the High Street within Haskins Retail Centre, which also includes a number of others shops including Aldi supermarket, Edinburgh Woollen Mill, Ponden Home, Pavers Shoes and an outlet clothing store.

Along the seafront is Pier 36, a restaurant and pub which has managed to accumulate a number of awards in its relatively short history including 2006's Pub of the Year in the awards organised by Federation of the Retail Licensed Trade.
