Reynolds, then acting wholly upon the biased assumption of the storekeeper, determined that the man in question was Orrin Porter Rockwell, a close associate of the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, Jr .. Reynolds eventually caught Orrin Porter Rockwell and held him for almost a year while he awaited trial.

Reynolds and painting
Sir Joshua Reynolds RA FRS FRSA ( 16 July 1723 – 23 February 1792 ) was an influential 18th-century English painter, specialising in portraits and promoting the " Grand Style " in painting which depended on idealization of the imperfect.
Reynolds often adapted the poses of his subjects from the works of earlier artists, a practice mocked by Nathaniel Hone in a painting called The Conjuror submitted to the Royal Academy exhibition of 1775, and now in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

During the Rococo era Portraiture was an important component of painting in all countries, but especially in Great Britain, where the leaders were William Hogarth ( 1697 – 1764 ), in a blunt realist style, and Francis Hayman ( 1708 – 1776 ), Angelica Kauffman who was Swiss, ( 1741 – 1807 ), Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds ( 1723 – 1792 ), in more flattering styles influenced by Antony Van Dyck ( 1599 – 1641 ).
Under the direction of Sir Joshua Reynolds, the Academy made a strong effort to promote history painting to a native audience who were more interested in commissioning and buying portraits and landscapes.
The painting now hangs in the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida which provides a permanent home for the collection of A. Reynolds Morse & Eleanor R. Morse.

In the modern popular mind, English art from about 1750 – 1790 — what is sometimes called the " classical age " of English painting — was dominated by the closely contemporary figures of Sir Joshua Reynolds ( 1723 – 1792 ), George Stubbs ( 1724 – 1806 ), and Thomas Gainsborough ( 1727 – 1788 ), with Joseph Wright of Derby ( 1734 – 1797 ) perhaps equally well-known.
