Max Gluckman, together with many of his colleagues at the Rhodes-Livingstone Institute and students at Manchester University, collectively known as the Manchester School, took BSA in new directions through their introduction of explicitly Marxist-informed theory, their emphasis on conflicts and conflict resolution, and their attention to the ways in which individuals negotiate and make use of the social structural possibilities.

Turner worked as research officer for the Rhodes-Livingstone Institute.

He directed the Rhodes-Livingstone Institute ( 1941 – 1947 ), before becoming the first professor of social anthropology at the University of Manchester ( 1949 ), where he founded what became known, including many of his Rhodes-Livingstone Institute colleagues along with his students, as the Manchester school of anthropology.

In 1937 Mitchell helped found the Rhodes-Livingstone Institute group of social anthropologists / sociologists, now a part of the University of Zambia.
