Data cheers him up by telling him that his action was an act of self-sacrifice that gave Data the chance to win his freedom, and stated that had Riker not done so and refused to participate, Louvois would have been forced to render a summary judgement in favor of Maddox.

One notable instance of this being overlooked was in " Encounter at Farpoint " where Lieutenant Data demonstrates to Commander Riker that they are very near the back wall of the holodeck by picking up a rock and throwing it against the wall, briefly disrupting the optical image.

Later, in the Observation Lounge onboard the Enterprise, Data finds Riker, who is ashamed of having to argue against his friend in the hearing.

Data went to Starfleet Academy from 2341 – 45 ( he describes himself as " Class of ' 78 " to Riker in " Encounter at Farpoint ", but that may refer to the stardate and not the year that he graduated ) and then served in Starfleet aboard the USS Trieste.

More recently, in the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, the crew is sometimes seen playing five-card stud, often an officer's game hosted by Commander William Riker and usually entered by Data ( as part of his efforts to become more human ), Worf, Geordi LaForge, Dr Beverley Crusher, Deanna Troi and occasionally by other crewmembers.

This also demonstrates another gaffe when the rock that Data throws should interact with the simulation by being dissolved and simply displayed to Riker and Data as the image of a rock being throw into the distance, instead of a physical object that breaks the illusion by striking the invisible wall.

On the Enterprise, First Officer Riker and the staff struggle to understand the alien's language and Riker has Commander Data work with ship's counselor Troi in hopes of translating it.

Although Shelby suggested attacking with the stardrive section, Riker does the reverse and orders the saucer section to fire an anti-matter spread near the Cube, disrupting its sensors and allowing a shuttlecraft piloted by Data and Worf to pass the Borg shields and beam aboard the Borg cube.

With the Borg on the verge of invading Earth, Riker orders the Enterprise to ram the Borg cube, but Data asks him to wait.

The Enterprise again arrives at the anomaly, and as the other ship emerges, both Data and Riker suggest alternate plans to avoid being hit.

Though Captain Jean-Luc Picard opts for Data's plan, Data realizes that the " three " message was in reference to the number of insignia pips worn by Riker, and initiates Riker's plan instead.

However, as her office is understaffed at the moment, she drafts Commander Riker to represent Maddox's interests, and the position that Data is the property of Starfleet and therefore without the broad array of human rights accorded in the United Federation of Planets, and Picard to represent Data's interests, that Data is a sentient being with the choice to resign from Starfleet and to refuse to undergo Maddox's procedures.

Data offers to move the survivors to the Enterprise and Commander Riker agrees.

As Data and Dr. Crusher work to thaw the cryonic survivors, Picard admonishes Data for bringing them aboard during a crucial time, and puts Riker in charge of them.

Riker and Picard discuss the developing details over a signal that Data and Spock have modified.

Riker, Data and Worf become trapped in a strange hotel on a planet otherwise incapable of supporting human life.

After arming the ship to self-destruct, Riker and Picard learn that the Bynars were stealing the ship to prevent a disaster on their own planet, and are able to help them.

The " gods " prevent the Enterprises attempt to rescue Wesley by blocking a transporter beam until convinced by a speech from Picard and First Officer Riker that true justice is impossible without exceptions.

Subsequent non-canon books have featured him as the Enterprise's new first officer after the departure of William Riker to his own command.

For the first two seasons, Riker is portrayed as bold and confident, an ambitious young officer ; however, over time Riker's character becomes more reserved, as experience teaches him the wisdom of a patient, careful approach.

Frakes had grown a mustache and beard between seasons, and Gene Roddenberry asked him to keep it, because he thought it made Riker look more dignified.

" I have this funny feeling that I spend most of my off hours here ," Ro explains to Riker before seducing him.

After correctly predicting several deaths, he tells his friend Captain Riker what he is able to see, but the Captain does not know whether to believe him or not.

Combs originally auditioned for the role of Commander William Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation, but lost out to Jonathan Frakes, though producers kept him in mind for casting in the later series.

Data is unable to answer when Riker rapidly asks him computational questions.

Commander Riker volunteers to allow Odan use him as a host to conduct the necessary negotiations and sustain the Odan lifeform until a new host arrives.

Similarly, in the New Frontier novel Double or Nothing, William Riker is somewhat taken aback by her, saying she reminds him of a woman he knows ( presumably Lwaxana Troi, also played by Barrett ).

Riker tracked them down and killed the only surviving captor, leaving Deanna and him alone together.

Admiral Riker realizes Data may try this, so he locates Commander Data and with him confronts Commodore Data, and they fight.

Now that the timeline has been restored, Admiral Riker has no way of knowing what awaits him in the restored future, but it is implied that his Imzadi is alive and waiting for him.

Shortly before the Scimitar's destruction, Riker married his off-and-on lover, Deanna Troi, who thereafter transferred to the Titan with him to serve as the vessel's counsellor and chief diplomatic officer.
