In the Iliad, Apollo is the healer under the gods, but he is also the bringer of disease and death with his arrows, similar to the function of the terrible Vedic god of disease Rudra.

The Vedic Rudra has some similar functions with Apollo.

Garuda flanked with his consorts ' Rudra ' and ' Sukirthi ' can be seen worshipped in an ancient Soumya Keshava temple in Bindiganavile ( or Mayura puri in Sanskrit ) in Karnataka state of India.

In Hinduism the Marutas (), also known as the Marutagana and sometimes identified with Rudras, are storm deities and sons of Rudra and Prisni and attendants of Indra, an ancient Vedic deity who later came to be identified with Shiva.

They are at times identified with the Maruts – sons of Rudra ; while at other times, considered distinct from them.

Rudra, identified with the Puranic Shiva ( pictured ) is associated with the Rudras.

The Vishnu Purana narrates that Rudra – here identified with Shiva – was born from the anger of the creator-god Brahma.

A theory suggests that slowly in the Vedas two classes of Maruts came into existence: the friendly and beneficent, and the roaring and turbulent ; the latter grew into the distinct group of deities called the Rudras, who were associated only with the wild Rudra.

In the Marut Suktas ( RV 1, 2, 5, 8 ) and Indra-Suktas ( RV 1, 3, 8, 10 ) of the Rigveda ( RV ), the epithet " Rudras " – originating from the verb root rud or ru and meaning howlers, roarers or shouters – is used numerous times for the Maruts – identifying them with the Rudras even when associated with Indra, rather than Rudra.

Stella Kramrisch notes a different etymology connected with the adjectival form raudra, which means wild, of rudra nature, and translates the name Rudra as " the Wild One " or " the Fierce God ".

In Hinduism, Diti () is an earth goddess and mother of the Maruts with Rudra.

The Śatarudrīya of Yajurveda shatters the extra-cosmic notion of Absolute ( Rudra ) and identifies it with both the good and the bad, the beautiful and the ugly, the right and the wrong, the positive and the negative, the high and the low, the conceivable and the inconceivable, the mortal and the immortal, existence and non-existence.

Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and Asad Ali Khan were known for their proficiency with the Rudra veena.

According to Hindu mythology, Virabhadra or Veerabhadra was a super being created by the wrath of Rudra ( Shiva ), when he stepped in to destroy the Yagna ( fire sacrifice ) of Daksha, after his daughter Dakshayani ( Sati )-consort of Shiva, self-immolated in yagna fire.

Guru Gobind Singh writes in Dasam Granth that Dattatreya was incarnation of Rudra.

Krishna Deva Raya's success at Ummatur provided the necessary impetus to carry his campaign into the Telangana region which was in control of Gajapati Prathapa Rudra Dev.

Rudra Singha ( reign 1696 to 1714 ) was a devout Hindu and as he grew older he decided to formally embrace the religion and become an orthodox Hindu by being initiated or taking sharan of a Guru, who would teach him the mantras and become his spiritual guide.

His son and successor Rudra Singha ( 1696 – 1714 ) searched for an alternative state religion, and his son and successor Siba Sinha ( 1714 – 1744 ) formally adopted Saktism, the nemesis of the Mahapuruxiya sects.

In August 2010, Rudra headlined the first day of Baybeats, an annual 3-day alternative music festival, held in Singapore.
