Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory were ceded to Canada in 1870.

The remainder of modern-day Canada was made up of Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory ( both of which were controlled by the Hudson's Bay Company and sold to Canada in 1870 ) and the Arctic Islands, which were under direct British control and became a part of Canada in 1880.

Other portions of Rupert's Land were added to the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, extending the provinces northward from their previous narrow band around the St. Lawrence and lower Great Lakes.

Rupert's family continued their attempts to regain the Palatinate during their time in The Hague.
