* June 7 – First Battle of Schooneveld: In a sea battle of the Third Anglo-Dutch War, fought off the Netherlands coast, the Dutch win with the fleet of the United Provinces ( commanded by Michiel de Ruyter ) against the allied Anglo-French fleet commanded by Prince Rupert of the Rhine.

Rupert now desperately attempted to close with the Dutch to save his fleet from destruction, but they at four miles to the coast retreated to save theirs, and by the morning of 15 June the damaged allied fleets sailed into the Thames and De Ruyter was safely back in the Schooneveld.
