Merseburg and Cathedral
In 1852, Haeckel completed studies at Cathedral High School ( Domgymnasium ) of Merseburg.
Among the notable buildings of Merseburg are the Merseburg Cathedral of St John the Baptist ( founded 1015, rebuilt in the 13th and 16th centuries ) and the episcopal palace ( 15th century ).
The organ sonata was dedicated to Professor Carl Riedel ; its premiere was by Reubke on the Ladegast organ ( 1853-1855 ) of Merseburg Cathedral on June 17, 1857.
The successful foundation not long beforehand of a Propstei Church on the site of the later Naumburger Cathedral was mentioned in the Merseburg Bishops ' Chronicles in 1021.
