Bartholdi was in any event busy with other possible projects ; in the late 1860s, he approached Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, with a plan to build a huge lighthouse in the form of an ancient Egyptian female fellah or peasant, robed and holding a torch aloft, at the northern entrance to the Suez Canal in Port Said.

External debts forced Said Pasha's successor, Isma ' il Pasha, to sell his country's share in the canal for £ 4, 000, 000 to the United Kingdom in 1875, but French shareholders still held the majority.

The construction of the canal was proposed by the engineer and French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps, who acquired from Said Pasha the rights of constructing and operating the canal for a period of 99 years.

Because of this, de Lesseps received a warm welcome from the viceroy and became good friends with his son, Said Pasha.

In 1854, the accession to the viceroyalty of Egypt of Said Pasha gave de Lesseps a new impulse to act upon the creation of a Suez Canal.

Said Pasha invited de Lesseps to pay him a visit, and on 7 November 1854 he landed at Alexandria ; on the 30th of the same month Said Pasha signed the concession authorizing him to build the Suez Canal.

He was succeeded by his uncle Said Pasha, the favorite son of Muhammad Ali, who lacked the strength of mind or physical health needed to execute the beneficent projects which he conceived.

In January 1863 Said Pasha died and was succeeded by his nephew Ismail, a son of Ibrahim Pasha.

Sharif, who was from Kavala in northern Greece, filled numerous administrative posts under Said Pasha and Ismail Pasha.

Said Ali, the commander of the Algerian ships, weighed anchor and sailed east, followed by Hussein Pasha with the 18 battleships.

Mehmed Said Pasha ( Modern Turkish: Küçük Mehmet Sait Paşa, literally the lesser Mehmed Said Pasha ; 1830-1914 ) was an Ottoman statesman and editor of the Turkish newspaper Jerid-i-Havadis.
