* Samuel Prout, watercolorist, lived for a time in Kennington Road.

In London Cotman was friends with a number of artists including James Stark, George Cattermole, Samuel Prout and Cornelius Varley.

Among the important and highly talented contemporaries of Turner and Girtin were John Varley, John Sell Cotman, Anthony Copley Fielding, Samuel Palmer, William Havell and Samuel Prout.

Samuel Prout ( September 17, 1783-February 10, 1852 ) was one of the masters of British watercolour architectural painting.

He was born at Plymouth, the fourth of fourteen children born to Samuel Prout Senior, a naval outfitter in the dockyard city, and Mary Cater.

Samuel Gillespie Prout followed in his father's footsteps by also painting watercolours.

Phillips also painted portraits of Walter Scott, Robert Southey, George Anthony Legh Keck ( 1830 ), Thomas Campbell ( poet ), Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Henry Hallam, Mary Somerville, Sir Edward Parry, Sir John Franklin, Dixon Denham, the African traveller, and Hugh Clapperton.

Opie painted many notable men and women of the day including Mary Wollstonecraft, Samuel Johnson, Francesco Bartolozzi, John Bannister, Joseph Munden, Charles James Fox, William Betty, Edmund Burke, John Crome, James Northcote, Henry Fuseli, Thomas Girtin, Robert Southey, Samuel Parr, Elizabeth Inchbald and Mary Shelley ; 508 portraits in all, most in oil, and 252 other pictures.

In another Dutch innovation, around 1650 Samuel van Hoogstraten painted one of the first wall-rack pictures, trompe-l ' œil still life paintings which feature objects tied, tacked or attached in some other fashion to a wall board, a type of still life very popular in the United States in the 19th century.

Other miniaturists of this period include Alexander Cooper ( died 1660 ), who painted a series of portraits of the children of the king and queen of Bohemia ; David des Granges ( 1611 – 1675 ); Richard Gibson ( 1615 – 1690 ); Susannah-Penelope Rosse, his daughter, who imitated the work of Samuel Cooper, and Charles Beale and Mary Beale.

The landscapes of the river's valley were painted in a visionary manner by the early Victorian artist Samuel Palmer.
