Kagoshima is approximately 40 minutes from Kagoshima Airport, and the city features large shopping districts and malls, is served by trams, and has many restaurants featuring Satsuma Province regional cuisine: kibi ( a kind of tiny fish ), tonkatsu ( caramelized pork, as opposed to the breaded version encountered elsewhere in Japan ), smoked eel, and karukan ( sweet cakes made from steamed yams and rice flour ).

The island is noted for various types of porcelain, including Arita, Imari, Satsuma, and Karatsu.

They grow in the tea hills of Hunan, China, where the climate is too cold for other citrus fruits, even the Mikan ( also known as the Satsuma ) orange.

Satsuma is well known for its production of sweet potatoes, known in Japan as 薩摩芋 ( satsuma-imo or " Satsuma potato ").

The Satsuma City School System is served by two schools, Robert E. Lee Elementary ( K-6 ) and Satsuma High School ( 7-12 ).

Tom Williams, a council member of Satsuma, said he began considering splitting once Mobile County decided to situate the new middle school in Axis, from Satsuma, since students have longer bus rides to the school and that the school is further away from fire and police stations.

It has a bay called Kagoshima Bay ( Kinkowan ), which is sandwiched by two peninsulas, Satsuma and Ōsumi.

In English the most common name for the war is the " Satsuma Rebellion.

" Mark Ravina, the author of The Last Samurai: The Life and Battles of Saigo Takamori, argued that " Satsuma Rebellion " is not the best name for the war because the English name does not well represent the war and its Japanese name.

* The 2003 movie The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe, is loosely based on the Satsuma Rebellion.

It served not only as the political center for Satsuma, but also for the semi-independent vassal kingdom of Ryūkyū ; Ryukyuan traders and emissaries frequented the city, and a special Ryukyuan embassy building was established to help administer relations between the two polities and to house visitors and emissaries.

Before the Satsuma City School System was founded, the schools that served Satsuma included Robert E. Lee Primary School ( Kindergarten through 2 ), Robert E. Lee Intermediate School ( 3 through 5 ), North Mobile County Middle School ( 6-8 ), Satsuma High School ( 9-12 ).

Yamamoto was born in Kagoshima in Satsuma Province ( now Kagoshima Prefecture ) as the son of samurai who served the Shimazu clan.

( 1578 – 1668 ) was a Japanese samurai of the Azuchi-Momoyama period through the early Edo period, who served the Shimazu clan of Satsuma.

Date ’ s correspondence with Abe served to hasten Narioki ’ s retirement and Nariakira ’ s ascendancy as daimyō of Satsuma.

Amakusa produces a little coal and fine kaolin, which was largely used in former times by the potters of Hirado and Satsuma Province.

Subsequent Godzilla suits worn by Satsuma were much safer and more comfortable, as they were custom-made to fit him ( even though the suits still had some dangers of their own ).

Kagoshima was bombarded by the British Royal Navy in 1863 to punish the daimyō of Satsuma for the murder of Charles Lennox Richardson on the Tōkaidō highway the previous year and its refusal to pay an indemnity in compensation.

The Satsuma clan earned considerable profits from trades with China during a period in which foreign trade was heavily restricted by the shogunate.

When the Tokugawa forces arrived outside Kyoto, they were refused entry, and were attacked by Satsuma and Choshu troops, starting the Battle of Toba-Fushimi, the first clash of the Boshin War.

Tōgō was born on 27 January 1848 ( by the Western calendar ) in the Kajiya-chō ( 加治屋町 ） district of the city of Kagoshima in Satsuma domain ( modern-day Kagoshima prefecture ), in feudal Japan, the third of four sons of Tōgō Sanetomo ( 1805-1867 ), a samurai serving the Shimazu daimyo, and Hori Masuko ( 1812-1901 ).

Tōgō's first experience at war was at the age of 15 during the Bombardment of Kagoshima ( August 1863 ), in which Kagoshima was shelled by the Royal Navy to punish the Satsuma daimyo for the death of Charles Lennox Richardson on the Tōkaidō highway the previous year ( the Namamugi Incident ), and the Japanese refusal to pay an indemnity in compensation.

As part of the government's privatization program, Kuroda attempted to sell the assets of the Hokkaidō Colonization Office to a trading consortium created by some of his former Satsuma colleagues for a nominal price.

Yamagata in 1877 led the newly modernized Imperial Army against the Satsuma Rebellion led by his former comrade in revolution, Saigō Takamori of Satsuma.

Due to his association with a former enemy clan of the new Imperial Government, which was dominated by the feudal clans of Chōshū and Satsuma, Hara for long remained an outsider in the world of politics.

Inukai helped form the Rikken Kokumintō political party in 1882, which supported liberal political causes, and strongly opposed the domination of the government by members of the former Chōshū and Satsuma domains ( hanbatsu ).

A Satsuma man, passing by, was infuriated by this behaviour on the part of a samurai — both by his lack of courage to avenge his master, as well as his current debauched behaviour.

The Namamugi Incident during 1862 led to the murder of an Englishman, Charles Lennox Richardson, by a party of samurai from Satsuma.

The Satsuma City Council received 21 applications for the five member board, and following two rounds of interviews the Satsuma Board of Education was formed with the following members being sworn in on June 7th, 2011: Linda Robbins, James B. Woosley, Diane Keasler, Jimmy Upton and Pat Hicks.

In June 2012, the Department of Justice granted Pre-Clearance to the board, officially establishing the Satsuma City School System.

Before the Saraland City Schools system formed, Satsuma residents attended Adams Middle School in Saraland.

In 2010 the City of Satsuma began conducting a study on whether it can split from the Mobile County school system.
