Antoine launched an expedition which reconquered Saverne on 17 May and crushed a peasant army on 20 May near Sélestat.

Likewise, in the northern Vosges Mountains, the French 2nd Armored Division spearheaded a U. S. Seventh Army advance, forced the Saverne Gap, and drove to the Rhine, liberating Strasbourg on 23 November 1944.

In 1525, he destroyed the Anabaptist peasant army, which was overrunning Lorraine, at Lupstein, near Saverne ( Zabern ).

But all efforts in behalf of the latter, the journey of the Württemberg theologians to Paris to advise King Antony of Navarre in 1561 ( see Jakob Beurlin ), the meeting of the duke and Brenz with Cardinal Guise of Lorraine at Saverne, the correspondence and the sending of writings, all ended in bitter disappointment.

The effects of this possibility would be seen with the vote of no confidence in the government of Theobald von Bethmann Hollweg over the Saverne Affair in 1913 and the Reichstag Peace Resolution of 1917.

Saverne was conquered by Imperial Germany after the Franco-Prussian War.

In 1913, the city was the theater of the infamous " Saverne Affair ".

The infamous Saverne Affair ( 1913 ), however, showed that this status was of no high value in the eyes of the Berlin government.

The reorganised army took the field again in 1636 and captured Saverne ( Zabern ), at the storming of which place Turenne suffered a serious wound.

In 1913, however, the Saverne Affair showed the limits of this new tolerance of the Alsatian identity.

Saverne (, ; Alsatian: Zawere ; ( German: )) is a commune in the Bas-Rhin department in Alsace in north-eastern France.

In 2006, Saverne had a total population of 11, 907, and its metropolitan area, of 17, 482.

The mountain pass ( Col de Saverne ) contains a vast botanical garden, the Jardin botanique du col de Saverne.

Saverne is also known for its famous Rose Garden, locally known as La roseraie.

They extend along the west side of the Rhine valley in a north-northeast direction, mainly from Belfort to Saverne.

Geographically, the Vosges Mountains are located wholly in France far above the Col de Saverne separating them from the Palatinate Forest in Germany, which logically continues the same Vosges geologic structure but traditionally receives this different name for historical and political reasons.

The itinerary was Aricia ( Ariccia ), Tres Tabernae, Forum Appii, Tarracina ( Terracina ), Fundi ( Fondi ), Formiae ( Formia ), Minturnae ( Minturno ), Sinuessa ( Mondragone ), Casilinum and Capua, but some of these were colonies added after the Samnite Wars.

The " Tres Tabernae was the first mansio or mutatio, that is, halting-place for relays, from Rome, or the last on the way to the city.

At this point three roads run into the Via Appia, that from Tusculum, that from Alba Longa, and that from Antium ; so necessarily here would be a halting-place, which took its name from the three shops there, the general store, the blacksmith's, and the refreshment-house ... Tres Tabernae is translated as Three Taverns, but it more correctly means three shops " ( Forbes's Footsteps of St. Paul, p. 20 ).

Tres Tabernae is best known as the point to which St. Paul's friends came to meet him on his journey to Rome.

Tres Tabernae was the place where the former Emperor Flavius Valerius Severus was held prisoner by Maxentius and Maximian, before being killed ( 307 ).

The position of the Tres Tabernae is also shown in the Tabula Peutingeriana in a location south of Rome.

Some time during the invasion, Severus was put to death by Maxentius, probably at Tres Tabernae near Rome ( the exact circumstances of his death are not certain ).

Despite Maximian's assurance, Severus was nonetheless displayed as a captive and later imprisoned at Tres Tabernae.

In 592, Pope Gregory I brings together in Velletri the Diocese of Tres Tabernae.
