The Albert Schweitzer Gold Medal for Humanitarianism was established in 1989.

Often confused with this award is the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism, established in 1986.

His pamphlet " The Art of Organ Building and Organ Playing in Germany and France " ( 1906, republished with an appendix on the state of the organ-building industry in 1927 ) effectively launched the 20th century Orgelbewegung, which turned away from romantic extremes and rediscovered baroque principles — although this sweeping reform movement in organ building eventually went further than Schweitzer himself had intended.

In Perfecting Friendship: Politics and Affiliation in Early American Literature, Ivy Schweitzer discusses the “ affective failures ” of Eliza Wharton ’ s female friends and argues that while Eliza can be understood as “ the champion of an inclusive, even feminist ‘ civic republicanism ,’” her friends belong to “ the female ‘ chorus ’ presages the more rigid separation of the sexes and women ’ s exile from the social to the domestic sphere ushered in by liberalism .” Claire C. Pettengill reads female friendship within The Coquette in terms of sisterhood, which she argues “ a kind of support network that helped a woman establish her identity in opposition to both social and parental authority in an era where both were increasingly challenged .” At the same time, Pettengill insists that the “ emotional-disciplinary circuit that reinforces sisterhood is not operating at full ( theoretical ) capacity .” That is, even though Eliza discusses her life with her friends, they do not fully reciprocate ; instead, they respond primarily by criticizing her actions and warning her against further wrongdoing.

For example Darrell Schweitzer writing to the New York Review of Science Fiction in 1999 quoted a passage from the original van Vogt novelette “ The Mixed Men ”, which he was then reading, and remarked:

Schweitzer found many New Testament references to apparently show that 1st-century Christians believed literally in the imminent fulfillment of the promise of the World's ending, within the lifetime of Jesus's original followers, He noted that in the gospel of Mark, Jesus speaks of a " tribulation ", with his coming in the clouds with great power and glory " ( St Mark ), and states when it will happen: " This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled " ( St Matthew, 24: 34 ) ( or, " have taken place " ( Luke 21: 32 )): " All these things shall come upon this generation " ( Matthew 23: 36 ).

Following this he was the first Albert Schweitzer Professor of Humanities at New York University until 1969.

John Danforth Herman Greenwood ( b. London 26 June 1889 d. Ditchling 15 April 1975 ), a composer best known for his work in motion pictures, was the son of a New Zealander, Alfred Greenwood ( 1842-1912 ) and his English-born wife Ottilie Rose Minna ( 1855-1932 ) née Schweitzer.

Schweitzer rapidly gained prominence as a musical scholar and organist, dedicated also to the rescue, restoration and study of historic pipe organs.

Although Schweitzer was among the greatest contributors to this quest, he also ended the quest by noting how each scholar's version of Jesus often seemed to reflect the personal ideals of the scholar, an observation first stated by Johannes Weiss in 1890, and which continues to be observed in Jesus research ( as it does in other historical studies ) even today.

Schweitzer concludes that the 1st century theology, originating in the lifetimes of those who first followed Jesus, is both incompatible with, and far removed from, those beliefs later made official by the Roman Emperor Constantine in 325 CE.

He first came into wide public acclaim with the release of Notre prison est un royaume (" Our Prison is a Kingdom ") in 1948, and Il est minuit, docteur Schweitzer (" It is midnight, Doctor Schweitzer ") in 1950.

According to Frederick M. Schweitzer and Marvin Perry, these references are " mostly negative " According to Tahir Abbas the general references to Jews are favorable, with only those addressed to particular groups of Jews containing harsh criticisms.

Renan's Life of Jesus was lavished with ironic praise and criticism by Albert Schweitzer in his book Quest of the Historical Jesus.

Weird Tales was more lastingly revived in 1988 under license by publisher / editors George H. Scithers, John Gregory Betancourt and Darrell Schweitzer, beginning with issue 290.
