Cayuga Lake ( or )&# 160 ; is the longest of central New York's glacial Finger Lakes, and is the second largest in surface area ( marginally smaller than Seneca Lake ) and second largest in volume.

It is connected to Lake Ontario by the Erie Canal and Seneca Lake by the Seneca River.

Cayuga Lake, like nearby Seneca Lake, is also the site of a phenomenon known as the Guns of the Seneca, mysterious cannon-like booms heard in the surrounding area.

The two longest, Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake, are among the deepest in America.

The eleven Finger Lakes from east to west are: Otisco Lake, Skaneateles Lake, Owasco Lake, Cayuga Lake, Seneca Lake, Keuka Lake, Canandaigua Lake, Honeoye Lake, Canadice Lake, Hemlock Lake, and Conesus Lake.

Seneca Lake is the largest of the glacial Finger Lakes of the U. S. state of New York, and the deepest lake entirely within the state.

Viticulture and winemaking in the area date back to the 19th century, with the foundation of the Seneca Lake Wine Company in 1866 marking the first major winery in the area.

These peoples traveled along an ancient route known as the Seneca Trail ( which is today approximately followed in North Bethesda by Old Georgetown Road ).

Like many ancient roads, the Seneca Trail followed a ridge line – in this case, the high ground between the Potomac River and Rock Creek.

Settlements formed along Rock Creek and the Seneca Trail in the 17th Century, with recorded land grants in this area known originally as “ Dan ” and “ Leeke Forest .”

In pre-colonial and early colonial times a major Indian pathway through the Great Valley was known as the Great Indian Warpath, Seneca Trail, and various other names.

The Seneca used the Genesee and Allegheny rivers, as well as the Great Indian War and Trading Path ( the Seneca Trail ), to travel from southern Lake Ontario into Pennsylvania and Ohio ( Merrill, Arch.

Much of the Route in West Virginia follows the old Indian warpath known as the Seneca Trail ( Great Indian Warpath ).

The famous Great Indian Warpath, known locally as the " Seneca Trail ", followed the Potomac River, allowing the Algonquian, Tuscarora, and Seneca nations to transit the area for purposes of trade and war.

Niagara Falls also hosts the Seneca Niagara Casino, the state's first urban based Native American casino.

Due to Seneca Lake's unique macroclimate it is home to over 50 wineries, many of them farm wineries and is the location of the Seneca Lake AVA.

Wildlife is abundant, and many varieties of fish are found in the local waters in the Seneca River.

The region was the locale of the Seneca tribe, a member of the Iroquois, and the sites of many important villages are in the town or the surrounding area.
