A number of commanders and politicians, notably Serbia's former president Slobodan Milošević, were put on trial by the United Nations ' International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia for a variety of war crimes — including deportations and genocide that took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.

Besides Arkan, a very notable member was his right hand man, Colonel Nebojša Djordjević Suca, murdered in late 1996, and notorious Milorad Ulemek, nicknamed " Legija ", now serving 40 year sentence for the assassination of Serbia's pro-Western prime minister Zoran Đinđić

A recent example comes from Javier Solana who said that the arrest of Radovan Karadžić was sine qua non for Serbia's joining the European Union and " it has been a very important step to move closer to Europe ".

Such movements have had a measure of success, as for example in Serbia's Bulldozer Revolution ( 2000 ); in Georgia's Rose Revolution ( 2003 ); and in Ukraine's Orange Revolution ( 2004 ).
