House Harkonnen's virtual extermination removes it as a galactic power, but Paul's ascension to the Imperial throne in Shaddam's place guarantees that Vladimir's descendants will long reign as the Imperial House Atreides.

The novels explore the last years of the reign of Shaddam's father, Elrood Corrino IX ( who is murdered by Count Hasimir Fenring at Shaddam's request ), and Shaddam's subsequent rise to power.

" Once Paul defeats the Baron's treacherous heir Feyd-Rautha in single combat, and Count Fenring refuses the Emperor's order to kill Paul, it is done — Paul will ascend the throne in Shaddam's place, assuming power of the Empire in Irulan's name.

Once his memories are restored, Paul recalls that after his ascension to the Imperial throne ( between the novels Dune and 1969's Dune Messiah ) he " had not been able to escape political struggles, assassination attempts, the exiled Emperor Shaddam's bid for power and the pretender daughter of Feyd-Rautha and Lady Fenring ..."

After Shaddam's eldest daughter Princess Irulan is forced into marriage to Paul to secure his claim to the Imperial throne, in Children of Dune Irulan's loyalty to the Sisterhood gives them false hope that she can help them topple Paul, or at least control his offspring.

Shaddam's accession to the throne is chronicled in the Prelude to Dune prequel trilogy ( 1999-2001 ) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

Shaddam's closest friend is the assassin Count Hasimir Fenring, a cousin and childhood companion.

It is during Dmitri's reign that House Harkonnen grows in status and is rewarded with the governorship of Arrakis by Shaddam's father, Padishah Emperor Elrood Corrino IX.

The plot against the Atreides is executed: lured to the desert planet Arrakis on the pretense of taking over the valuable melange operation there, the Atreides are soon attacked by Harkonnen forces ( secretly supplemented by Shaddam's seemingly unstoppable Imperial Sardaukar ).

As Padishah Emperor Shaddam's chief counsellor, Fenring is frequently described as " the Emperor's errand boy " in the novel.

Shaddam's authority is also challenged by the powerful House Harkonnen, whose illegal stock-piling of melange is of great concern to the Emperor.

As Dune begins, the 81st Padishah Emperor is Shaddam Corrino IV, successor to Elrood IX ; all that is noted of Elrood in Dune is that he had died by chaumurky ( poison ) and that Shaddam's close friend Count Hasimir Fenring was rumored to have been responsible.

A Bene Gesserit of Hidden Rank and wife of the 81st Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV, Anirul is the mother of Shaddam's five daughters, the Princesses Irulan, Chalice, Wensicia, Josifa, and Rugi, and is the grandmother of Farad ' n Corrino.

After Shaddam's Sardaukar are disastrously defeated by the Fremen assault, Paul sets his terms: the Imperial armada will leave Arrakis, Shaddam will step down and Paul will marry Irulan — or he will destroy all spice production.

" Shaddam's elder brother Crown Prince Fafnir had been laid to rest among " coffins and chambers for children and siblings ," his tomb marked by an " idealized statue " of him.

The Bene Gesserit had also placed their acolyte Jessica ( herself the product of a secret Bene Gesserit liaison with the Baron Harkonnen ) as the concubine to Duke Leto Atreides, and married the Bene Gesserit Margot to Shaddam's close friend and minion Count Fenring.

The series also shows the origins of Shaddam's rivalry with Duke Leto Atreides I, and introduces Lady Anirul, the Bene Gesserit mother of Shaddam's daughters.

Prior to the events of Dune: House Atreides, Fenring had murdered the Crown Prince Fafnir, older brother to Shaddam, to secure Shaddam's position as heir.

Over a decade later in Dune Messiah ( 1969 ), Emperor Paul remains in a political marriage with Shaddam's eldest daughter, Princess Irulan, and has yet to beget another child with his true love Chani.

She, along with the Tleilaxu Face Dancer Scytale, the Spacing Guild Navigator Edric, and Paul's embittered consort ( and Shaddam's daughter ) Princess Irulan of House Corrino, plot to insinuate the Tleilaxu ghola Hayt into the court to weaken Paul's confidence in his prescience and thereby ruin him.

To cement his control of the Empire after deposing Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV, Paul takes Shaddam's daughter, the Princess Irulan as his wife.

" In her work In My Father's House ( referenced via an epigraph in Dune ), Shaddam's daughter Princess Irulan later writes of Fenring: " My father had only one real friend, I think.

The Prelude to Dune prequel trilogy establishes that Fenring had actually been born in 10, 118 A. G .; his mother, Lady Chaola or Cirni Fenring, had been a Bene Gesserit and lady-in-waiting to Habla, the fourth wife of Shaddam's father, Padishah Emperor Elrood Corrino IX, and served as wet nurse to both her son Hasimir and Crown Prince Shaddam.

And the common man was developing mythic power, or charisma, on his own.
