Assata Olugbala Shakur ( born July 16, 1947, as JoAnne Deborah Byron, married name Chesimard ) is an African-American activist and escaped convict who was a member of the Black Panther Party ( BPP ) and Black Liberation Army ( BLA ).

Shakur is alleged to have said that she was glad that she had been shot since now that she had experienced what it was like she was no longer afraid to be shot again.

It is at this point, with the questioning of Zayd Shakur, that the accounts of the confrontation begin to differ ( see the witnesses section below ).

Assata Shakur was interrogated and arraigned from her hospital bed, and her medical care during this period is often alleged to have been " substandard ".

The group usually performed their concerts without Shakur. Shakur's music and philosophy is rooted in many American, African-American, and World entities, including the Black Panther Party, Black nationalism, egalitarianism, and liberty.

He is mentioned by Tupac Shakur in the song " Ghetto Gospel ", the Smif-N-Wessun song " Still Fighting ," the Bhi Bhiman song " Up in Arms ", " Get Up " by The Coup and Dead Prez as well as the Dead Prez song " RGB Till ' I Die " and in Bishop Lamont's " Land of the Free "

Digital Underground is also notable for launching the career of member Tupac Shakur, as well as spinning off side projects and solo acts including Raw Fusion, Saafir, and female singer Mystic.

It is known to have signed many popular West Coast hip hop artists such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, MC Hammer, Nate Dogg and the rap group Tha Dogg Pound consisting of rappers Kurupt and Daz Dillinger also Lisa " Left Eye " Lopes of TLC although most if not all departed from the label after its demise following the murder of Tupac Shakur in 1996.
