In collaboration with Shen Lin he devised well-known heuristics for two NP-complete optimization problems: graph partitioning and the travelling salesman problem.

The most popular of the k-opt methods are 3-opt, and these were introduced by Shen Lin of Bell Labs in 1965.

" The ancient Chinese scientist Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ) was the first person to write of the magnetic needle compass and that it improved the accuracy of navigation by employing the astronomical concept of true north ( Dream Pool Essays, AD 1088 ), and by the 12th century the Chinese were known to use the lodestone compass for navigation.

* Alexander Neckam is the first European to document the mariner's compass, first documented by Shen Kuo during the previous century.

* Zhu Yu's book is the first to report the use of a magnetic compass for navigation at sea, although the first actual description of the magnetic compass is by another Chinese writer Shen Kuo in his Dream Pool Essays published in 1088.

It also describes the double-piston pump flamethrower and a thermoremanence compass, a few decades before Shen Kuo wrote of the first known magnetic mariners compass.

Wooden movable type was also first developed around 1040 AD by Bi Sheng ( 毕昇 ) ( 990 – 1051 ), as described by the Chinese scholar Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ), but was abandoned in favour of clay movable types due to the presence of wood grains and the unevenness of the wooden type after being soaked in ink.

The Song Dynasty Chinese scientist Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ) experimented with a camera obscura, and was the first to apply geometrical and quantitative attributes to it in his book of 1088 AD, the Dream Pool Essays.

In fact, Shen makes no assertion that he was the first to experiment with such a device.

Shen Kuo was the first to discern magnetic declination of true north while experimenting with a compass.

The first theory of geomorphology was arguably devised by the polymath Chinese scientist and statesman Shen Kuo ( 1031-1095 AD ).

Along with experimenting with the pinhole camera and the burning mirror of the ancient Mohists, the Song Dynasty ( 960 – 1279 CE ) Chinese scientist Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ) experimented with camera obscura and was the first to establish geometrical and quantitative attributes for it.

Outside China, these seem to be the earliest records ( the Chinese encyclopaedist Shen Kuo gave the first clear account of suspended magnetic compasses a hundred years earlier in 1088 AD with his book Mengxibitan, or Dream Pool Essays ).

Ming Pao was first published on May 20, 1959, and was founded by the famous Chinese wuxia novelist Louis Cha (), known better by his pseudonym Jinyong ( 金庸 ), and his friend, Shen Pao Sing ( 沈寶新 ).

After being created Earl Macartney in the Irish peerage ( 1792 ), he was appointed the first envoy of Britain to China ( his visit followed more than a hundred years after the first visit to England by a Chinese man, Michael Shen Fu-Tsung in 1685 ).

At first things are difficult, but soon they become friends and are able to work together to search for Shen Gong Wu.

In GR the spelling of his given name " Shiing-Shen " indicates a third tone for Shiing and a first tone for Shen, which are equivalent to the syllables " Xǐngshēn " in pinyin.

The Chinese emperor Shen Nung ( of the Han Dynasty ) is said to have written the first Chinese herbal, the Pen Tsao.

Liu Yu's fleet, commanded by Wang Zhen ' e ( 王鎮惡, Wang Meng's grandson ), advanced quickly, while Yao Hong tried to first destroy Liu Yu's flank forces, commanded by Shen Linzi's brother Shen Tianzi.

Pu Songling brought the short story form to a new level in his Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, published in the mid-18th century, and Shen Fu demonstrated the charm of the informal memoir in Six Chapters of a Floating Life, written in the early 19th century but published only in 1877.

They replaced earlier double slipways that had caused trouble and are mentioned by the Chinese polymath Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ) in his book Dream Pool Essays ( published in 1088 ), and fully described in the Chinese historical text Song Shi ( compiled in 1345 ):

A critical reconstruction of the lost book of Shenzi was made by Paul Thompson, and published in 1979 as The Shen Tzu Fragments.

Despite the achievements of Shen and Guo's work in trigonometry, another substantial work in Chinese trigonometry would not be published again until 1607, with the dual publication of Euclid's Elements by Chinese official and astronomer Xu Guangqi ( 1562 – 1633 ) and the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci ( 1552 – 1610 ).

In 1996 he published his first poetry collection, Beduini i fundit ( Orana ), and in 1997 published his first prose book, Nata e Shen Valentinit ( Marin Barleti ).

* 1080 – 1081: The Chinese statesman and scientist Shen Kuo is put in command of the campaign against the Western Xia, and although he successfully halts their invasion route to Yanzhou ( modern Yan ' an ), another officer disobeys imperial orders and the campaign is ultimately a failure because of it.

In 1998, the group released its last album of original material under the NTM moniker, as both Joey Starr and Kool Shen started their own labels, promoting new bands and branching out in other fields such as the clothing industry ( 2High is Kool Shen's brand, Com-8 is Joey Starr's ).

Joey Starr and Kool Shen started learning how to dance and defined their own style, smurf for Joey Starr and break dancing for Kool Shen.

Since Xu Shen did not have access to Chinese characters in their earliest forms, his analysis cannot always be taken as authoritative.

Equipped with the magnetic compass and knowledge of Shen Kuo's famous treatise ( on the concept of true north ), the Chinese became proficient experts of navigation in their day.

The ' Green Wizard ' Carolinus ( Harry Morgan ) discovers magic failing as humanity embraces science, and summons his magic brothers Lo Tae Zhao ( Don Messick ) the Golden Wizard ; Solarius ( Paul Frees ) the Blue Wizard ; and Ommadon ( James Earl Jones ) the Red Wizard, accompanied by their dragons Shen Tsu, Lunarian, and Bryagh ( James Gregory ), to whom he explains that the world's magic is dying and outlines a plan to save it by creating a ' Last Realm of Magic ' wherein all magical beings can live, hidden from the rest of the world.

Over the next few years, Cao Mao gradually established a circle of people around him, including Sima Zhao's cousin Sima Wang, Wang Shen ( 王沈 ), Pei Xiu, and Zhong Hui, all of whom were known for their literary talent.

In Chinese mythology, Lei Gong ( 雷公 ) ( Chinese: " Duke of Thunder "), also called Lei Kung, or Lei Shen (“ Thunder God ”), is the Chinese Taoist deity who, when so ordered by heaven, punishes both earthly mortals guilty of secret crimes and evil spirits who have used their knowledge of Taoism to harm human beings.

In analyzing the structure of characters and defining the words represented by them, Xu Shen strove to disambiguate the meaning of the pre-Han Classics, so as to render their usage by government unquestioned and bring about order, and in the process also deeply imbued his organization and analyses with his philosophy on characters and the universe.

Xu Shen analytically organized characters in the comprehensive Shuowen Jiezi through their shared graphic components, which Boltz ( 1993: 431 ) calls " a major conceptual innovation in the understanding of the Chinese writing system.

A few years before Guo was born, his parents retained a private tutor, Shen Huanzhang, to provide education for their children, in the hope of them later passing civil service examinations.

This was criticized by the polymath official Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ), who endorsed the idea that materials, technologies, and objects of antiquity should be studied for their functionality and for the discovery of ancient manufacturing techniques.

The rear hall contains a modern statue of the god Erlang Shen who was allegedly Li Bing ’ s son, but historic records fail to confirm this and it is possible that he was invented by locals to give their hero a descendent to maintain his family heritage.

Shen Kuo refuted Emperor Daozong's bluffs point for point, while the Song reestablished their rightful border line.

Shen once computed the amount of terrain space required for battle formations in military strategy, and also computed the longest possible military campaign given the limits of human carriers who would bring their own food and food for other soldiers.

While Shen's educated Confucian contemporaries were interested in obtaining ancient relics and antiques in order to revive their use in rituals, Shen was more concerned with how items from archeological finds were originally manufactured and what their functionality would have been, based on empirical evidence.

Shen Kuo criticized those in his day who reconstructed ancient ritual objects using only their imagination and not the tangible evidence from archeological digs or finds.

In 2008, Kingsoft featured Cheng in their popular online game The First Myth 2 ( 封神榜II ) as " Er Lang Shen " ( 二郎神 ) a character in the game.

He also inherited the clan name of Shen from his father, but his fame led some of his descendants to adopt Ye as their clan name.

Shortly after their completion, the original scores of the opera by Tang Xianzu ( 汤显祖 ), considered awkward and difficult for performers, were greatly revised by Shen Jing ( 沈璟 ), a major figure in the formation of Chinese kunqu, not without many disputes and resistance from Tang Xianzu himself.
