Elizabeth's reign is known as the Elizabethan era, famous above all for the flourishing of English drama, led by playwrights such as William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe, and for the seafaring prowess of English adventurers such as Sir Francis Drake.

* November 28 – At Gresham College in London, twelve men, including Christopher Wren, Robert Boyle, John Wilkins, and Sir Robert Moray meet after a lecture by Wren and decide to found " a College for the Promoting of Physico-Mathematicall Experimentall Learning " ( later known as the Royal Society ).

It is said that Coke first suggested marrying Hatton to Sir Robert Cecil, Hatton's uncle, at the funeral of Lord Burghley, Coke's patron ; he needed to ensure that he would continue his rise under Burghley's son, Cecil, and did this by marrying into the family.

Their son, John Hatton, settled at Holdenby, and had three sons, of whom Sir Christopher Hatton's father, William, was the eldest.

In 1567 Sir Christopher Hatton's brother, Thomas, married John Newport's sister, Ursula Newport.

Sir Christopher Hatton's early education is said to have been supervised by his maternal uncle, William Saunders ( d. 1582x4 ), but otherwise nothing is known of his life until he entered St. Mary's Hall, Oxford as a gentleman commoner at 15 or 16 years of age.

A report spread that Hatton had contrived Northumberland's death, and some years later Sir Walter Raleigh, in writing to Sir Robert Cecil, referred to Hatton's guilt as proved.

After Sir William Hatton's death in 1597, she married Sir Edward Coke, but kept the Hatton name, and died in 1646.

An example of this nationalism can be seen in Lord Chancellor Sir Christopher Hatton's opening speech to Parliament in 1589 in the aftermath of the defeat of the Armada.
