Sir Francis Drake, Vice Admiral ( 1540 – 27 January 1596 ) was an English sea captain, privateer, navigator, slaver, and politician of the Elizabethan era.

In 1585, Drake married Elizabeth Sydenham — born circa 1562, the only child of Sir George Sydenham, of Combe Sydenham, who was the High Sheriff of Somerset.

As Sir Francis Drake had no children, his estate and titles passed on to his nephew ( also named Francis ).

At age 23, Drake made his first voyage to the New World, sailing with his second cousin, Sir John Hawkins, on one of a fleet of ships owned by his relatives, the Hawkins family of Plymouth.
