In 1776 Mackenzie married Penuel, daughter of Sir Ludovich Grant of Grant.

Despite this, when the two rival companies merged in 1821 under the name the Hudson's Bay Company, the new governor, Sir George Simpson, requested Grant to head a Métis settlement of some 2, 000 people situated some 16 miles west of the Red River Colony on the Assiniboine River.

Banting's name is immortalised in the yearly Banting Lectures, given by an expert in diabetes, and by the creation of the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research of the University of Toronto ; Banting Memorial High School in Alliston, ON ; Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School in London, ON ; Sir Frederick Banting Alternative Program Site in Ottawa, ON ; and École Banting Middle School in Coquitlam, BC.

He also spent a semester at Regina Mundi Catholic College in London ( Ontario ) and attended weekend acting lessons at Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School.

He has published biographies of two Canadians, the discoverer of insulin Sir Frederick Banting and the famous physician Sir William Osler.

Alliston's most famous citizen was Sir Frederick Banting the co-discoverer of insulin.

Until her election in 2006, she continued to teach English at Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School in London, Ontario and served on the District 11 Ontario Secondary School Teachers ' Federation Political Action Committee.
