Most of Smith's weird fiction falls into four series set variously in Hyperborea, Poseidonis, Averoigne and Zothique.

With studied playfulness, Smith and Lovecraft borrowed each other's coinages of place names and the names of strange gods for their stories, though so different is Smith's treatment of the Lovecraft theme that it has been dubbed the ' Clark Ashton Smythos '.

Amongst Smith's science fiction tales are stories set on Mars and the invented planet of Xiccarph.

Many of Smith's stories were published in six hardcover volumes by August Derleth under his Arkham House imprint.

Additionally, many of the Conan stories by Howard, de Camp and Carter used geographical place names from Clark Ashton Smith's Hyperborean Cycle.

Street and Smith's next innovation was the introduction of specialized genre pulps, each magazine focusing on a genre such as detective stories, romance, etc.

Many of Smith's Hyperborean cycle stories were rejected as well.

Many of Clark Ashton Smith's short stories feature powerful wizards whose magic enables them to return from the dead.

A number of other Averoigne stories exist in outline form, uncompleted at the time of Smith's death.

The first space marine unit, the Galactic Marines, was used in E. E. Smith's Lensman series, published starting in 1937., but the lesser known Bob Olsen ( 1884-1956 ) also wrote a few stories and novelettes about Space Marines in Amazing Stories (" Captain Brink of the Space Marines ", November 1932 ; " The Space Marines and the Slavers ", December 1936 ).

The Instrumentality of Mankind is also the title of a paperback collection of short stories by Cordwainer Smith published in 1979 ( now superseded by the later The Rediscovery of Man, which collects all of Smith's short stories ).

This somewhat empty and sterile system was reformed and enlivened by the " Rediscovery of Man ", the backdrop against which Smith's novel Norstrilia and the majority of his short stories, covering thousands of years of fictional time, are set.

During the Golden Age of Science Fiction, Cordwainer Smith's parahuman underpeople ( humans derived from animal stock ) were an important part of his Instrumentality stories.

According to Smith's stories, the future continent of Zothique is bounded by sea to the west, south, and east ; its northern boundaries are dubious.
