Roger Smith suffered from MG from the mid-60s until his MG went into remission in 1985.

While participating in childhood athletic activities, Smith developed quick reflexes ; he went on to play baseball in high school and college, at Los Angeles ' Locke High School and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo respectively.

Following Smith's death, the Labour Party renamed its party headquarters in Walworth Road John Smith House in his memory.

The sense that Smith's untimely death cheated him of the premiership may well have contributed to the nostalgia for his leadership by the Labour left, although Smith was always on the Gaitskellite wing of the party.
