Soe Tjen Marching is also known as a poet and a composer.

Soe was an ethnic Chinese Roman Catholic, the fourth of five children in his family ; his elder brother Arief Budiman, a sociologist and lecturer at Satya Wacana Christian University, was also quite a vocal critical voice in Indonesian politics.

Soe is also the subject of a 1997 book, written by Dr John Maxwell and entitled Soe Hok-Gie: Diary of a Young Indonesian Intellectual.

While in real life Soe did date several girls in the UI, Ira and Sinta in this movie are fictional characters because the women that were in fact close to Soe refused to make themselves known and reveal details of their relationship with Soe.

Many interest groups sought Soe to support their campaigns, while many enemies of Soe jump at any opportunity to intimidate him.

Even for the 2005 biographical movie Gie, which tells the tale of the Chinese student Soe Hok Gie who challenged the power of Sukarno, the Indo actor Nicholas Saputra was selected.

The film tells the story of Soe Hok Gie, a graduate from University of Indonesia who is known as an activist and nature lover.

However, as the relationship intensified, the girl's parents began to find excuses to prevent Soe and their daughter from seeing each other because the parents did not want to risk having their daughter married to a man who was struggling to make ends meet financially and was frequently the target of hate speech and other threats.

Djin Hok was the friend of Soe who experienced domestic abuse in his aunt's house, while Effendi was the friend who was abducted for his alleged involvement in the PKI.

Other additional characters include Denny ( a humorous and outspoken friend of Soe ), Jaka ( promoter of the Catholic student union who turned out to only have used politics as a means of obtaining personal gain ) and Santi ( a prostitute introduced to Soe as the boys ' attempt to stimulate Soe to do something about his potentially romantic relationship with Ira ).

Soe Hok Gie ( 17 December 1942 – 16 December 1969 ) was a Chinese Indonesian activist who opposed the successive dictatorships of Presidents Sukarno and Suharto.

The first years of Burmese independence were marked by successive insurgencies by the Red Flag Communists led by Thakin Soe, the White Flag Communists led by Thakin Than Tun, the Yèbaw Hpyu ( White-band PVO ) led by Bo La Yaung, a member of the Thirty Comrades, army rebels calling themselves the Revolutionary Burma Army ( RBA ) led by Communist officers Bo Zeya, Bo Yan Aung and Bo Yè Htut — all three of them members of the Thirty Comrades, Arakanese Muslims or the Mujahid, and the Karen National Union ( KNU ).

While under contract to the Sunday Times Magazine he won four press awards and was voted Writer of the Year by the Society of British Magazine Editors. His book Magnum, on the legendary photo agency, was described by John Simpson as ‘ the best book on photo-journalism I have ever read ’, and his oral histories of D-Day, Nothing Less Than Victory, and the Soe, Behind The Lines were widely acclaimed, both in Britain and in the United States.

He is inspired by two personal friends of Soe, Djin Hok and Effendi.

Disillusioned, Aung San began negotiations with Communist leaders Thakin Than Tun and Thakin Soe, and Socialist leaders Ba Swe and Kyaw Nyein which led to the formation of the Anti-Fascist Organisation ( AFO ) in August 1944 at a secret meeting of the CPB, the PRP and the BNA in Pegu.

Thakins Than Tun and Soe, while in Insein prison in July 1941, had co-authored the Insein Manifesto which, against the prevailing opinion in the Dobama movement, identified world fascism as the main enemy in the coming war and called for temporary cooperation with the British in a broad allied coalition which should include the Soviet Union.

Soe had already gone underground to organise resistance against the Japanese occupation, and Than Tun was able to pass on Japanese intelligence to Soe, while other Communist leaders Thakins Thein Pe and Tin Shwe made contact with the exiled colonial government in Simla, India.

At the first meeting, the AFO represented itself to the British as the provisional government of Burma with Thakin Soe as Chairman and Aung San as a member of its ruling committee.

The agreement left parts of the communist and conservative branches of the AFPFL dissatisfied, however, sending the Red Flag Communists led by Thakin Soe underground and the conservatives into opposition.

Also assisting in the capture of Rangoon was the Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League led by Thakin Soe with Aung San ( the future Prime Minister of Burma and father of Aung San Suu Kyi ) as one of its military commanders.

He was detained by the colonial government in 1940 along with Thakin Soe, Thakin Than Tun, Kyaw Nyein, Myoma U Than Kywe, U Măd, and Dr. Ba Maw.

It was founded by the Communist Party of Burma ( CPB ) led by Thakin Soe, the Burma National Army ( BNA ) led by Aung San, and the People's Revolutionary Party ( PRP ) ( later evolved into the Socialist Party ) led by U Nu, at a secret meeting in Pegu in August 1944 as the Anti-Fascist Organisation ( AFO ) to resist the Japanese occupation.

When in March 1945 Aung San led the BNA in a national uprising against the Japanese and the Burmese puppet government led by Dr Ba Maw, it was done in the name of a provisional government of the AFO led by Thakin Soe.

Thakin Soe started a rebellion after splitting from the CPB forming a splinter group called the Red Flag Communist Party.

A major landmark in Burmese literature was called the Hkit san ( Testing the Times, ) movement, a search for a new style and content, led most notably by Theippan Maung Wa along with Nwe Soe, Zawgyi, Min Thu Wun and Mya Kaytu, while still at university and after, in the decade before the Second World War.

George Aditjondro's mother is Dutch, and Soe Tjen Marching's great grandmother is Polish Dutch.
