Albert Goodwill Spalding ( Byron, Illinois September 2, 1850 – September 9, 1915 in Point Loma, San Diego, California ) was a professional baseball player, manager and co-founder of A. G. Spalding sporting goods company.

Following the formation of baseball's first professional organization, the National Association of Professional Baseball Players, which became known as the National Association, the Association, or NA, in 1871, Spalding joined the Boston Red Stockings ( precursor club to the modern Atlanta Braves ) and was highly successful ; winning 206 games ( and losing only 53 ) as a pitcher and batting. 323 as a hitter.

In the following months, Hulbert and Spalding organized the National League by enlisting the four major teams in the East and the three other top teams in what was then considered to be the West.

Spalding also founded the Baseball Guide, which at the time was the most widely-read baseball publication.

In 1900 Spalding was appointed by President McKinley as the USA's Commissioner at that year's Summer Olympic Games.

The commission, though, was biased, as Spalding would not appoint anyone to the commission if they believed the sport was somewhat related to the English sport of rounders.

Receiving the archives of Henry Chadwick in 1908, Spalding combined these records with his own memories ( and biases ) to write America's National Game ( published 1911 ) which, despite its flaws, was probably the first scholarly account of the history of baseball.

Baseball, said Spalding, was fundamentally an American sport and began on American soil.

Spalding won 47 games and Barnes led the league in hitting at. 429 as Chicago won the first ever National League pennant, which at the time was the game's top prize.

Despite a friendship with Albert Spalding, Chadwick was scornful of the attempts to have Abner Doubleday declared the inventor of baseball.

In the game A. G. Spalding was pitcher and Ross Barnes shortstop for the Forest City nine ; these two afterwards becoming famous as star players of the Boston professional team of the early seventies.

This is the western end of what was until recently known as the UMIST Main Building, pictured above, a grade II listed building by Spalding and Cross with Renaissance motifs of Burmantofts terracotta.

The Main Building ( now called the Sackville Street Building ) was purpose-built between 1895 and 1902 by Spalding and Cross.

They then won back to back World Series titles in 1907 – 08 In 1902, Spalding, who by this time had revamped the roster to boast what would soon be one of the best teams of the early century, sold the club to Jim Hart, and the franchise became known as the Chicago Cubs.

In reference to Presence and Resistance by Philip Auslander, a performance art critic, Sally Banes writes “… by the end of the 1980s, performance art had become so widely known that it no longer needed to be defined ; mass culture, especially television, had come to supply both structure and subject matter for much performance art ; and several performance artists, including Laurie Anderson, Spalding Gray, Eric Bogosian, Willem Dafoe, and Ann Magnuson, had indeed become crossover artists in mainstream entertainment .”

These included a drain running from Pode Hole to below Spalding, which is still known as Vernatt's Drain, after one of the adventurers called Sir Philibert Vernatti.

Spalding is well known for its annual Flower Parade which attracts many regular visitors from all over the world.

* The EMAP publishing company, now mainly based in Orton and formerly known as East Midlands Allied Press, was started by Sir Richard Winfrey in Spalding when he bought the Spalding Guardian in 1887.

The concept of " Ascended Masters " was further popularized by authors such as Baird T. Spalding during the 1930s, and by organizations like The Bridge to Freedom ( founded 1951 ) ( known in the 1980s as The New Age Church of the Christ, and later as The Bridge to Spiritual Freedom ), The Summit Lighthouse ( founded 1958 ), and various other organizations such as the White Eagle Lodge ( 1936 ).

Later, in 1905, Spalding organized a panel of experts known as the Mills Commission to investigate the issue.

Wainwright is perhaps best known for the 1972 novelty song Dead Skunk ( in the Middle of the Road ) and for playing Captain Calvin Spalding ( the " singing surgeon ") on the American television show, M * A * S * H. His appearances spanned three episodes in its third season ( 1974 – 1975 ), including the episode " Rainbow Bridge ".

Spalding carried out some remarkable experiments on animal behaviour, and discovered the phenomenon now known as imprinting, later rediscovered by Oskar Heinroth, then studied at length and popularised by Konrad Lorenz.

The “ Desperado ” of the title is not Billy the Kid, but a Major League Baseball owner, William Hulbert, who along with Albert Spalding and Cap Anson, added impetus to the movement to " steal " baseball from African American players, a little known fact in baseball lore, yet one Ritter believed showed a character even more nefarious: “ Others would also tend to downplay baseball ’ s racial divide, as personified by the management of these Chicago White Stockings ( later to become the Chicago Cubs ).

The most notable Johnson was the second Maurice Johnson, known as " the Antiquary " ( 1688 – 1755 ), who founded the Spalding Gentlemen's Society ( the second oldest antiquarian society still in existence ) in 1710.

In 1986, actor Spalding Gray, who had a small role in the film as the American consul, created Swimming to Cambodia, an acclaimed monologue ( later filmed by Jonathan Demme ) based upon his experiences making The Killing Fields.

She won the role of Erika Spalding in 2004, relocating to Los Angeles to film the series.

Spalding retired from playing baseball in 1878, although he continued as a major force as owner of the White Stockings and major influence on the National League.

The nearest major hospitals to Spalding are at Boston ( 18 miles north ) and Peterborough ( 20 miles south-east ).

Spalding is located at the centre of a major region of flower and vegetable growth, due to the rich silty soil which mainly comprises drained recovered marshland or estuary.

Known as The Heart of the Fens, Spalding is famous as a centre of the bulb industry, and has close links with the Netherlands ( origin of the Geest family, who were former major local employers ).

* Spalding ( England ) has an annual Tulip Parade that takes place on the first Saturday in May, and is a major tourist attraction, comprising a procession of floats on various themes, each decorated with tulip petals, a by-product of the bulb industry.

The Great Northern Railway ( GNR ) arrived in Peterborough with the opening of the major portion of its " loop line " between Peterborough, Spalding, Boston and Lincoln, which opened on 17 October 1848 ; at first GNR trains used the ECR station at Peterborough East.
