In 1977, the newly-formed New Jersey Department of Transportation received a federal grant to construct the Route 18 Freeway from New Street in New Brunswick, across the Raritan and terminating at Middlesex County Route 514 Spur in Piscataway.

In 2001, the New Jersey Department of Transportation approved construction of extending the Route 18 Freeway northward from Middlesex County Route 622 ( River Road, former CR 514 Spur ) in Piscataway to a new arterial on the existing Hoes Lane in the Rutgers University campuses.

The route intersects County Route 506 Spur ( Clay Street ).

It interchanges with County Route 524 Spur ( Atlantic Avenue ) and passes more businesses and wooded areas before reaching the Allenwood Circle, where Route 34 intersects County Route 524 ( Allaire Road ).

Here, Route 34 intersects County Route 516 ( Broad Street ) and Route 79 and County Route 516 Spur ( Main Street ).

It meets County Route 524 Spur at the Manasquan Circle, where the Circle Factory Outlet Center is located.

Pleasant Avenue and north on Prospect Avenue while County Route 677 ( signed as County Route 577 Spur ) heads south on Prospect Avenue.

With Spur 557, it serves as the shortest freeway route from the central and northern portions of Dallas to Interstate 20, heading east towards Shreveport, Louisiana.

This intersection also serves as the termini for M-10 and Business Spur I-375 ( BS I-375 ).

North of Stillwater, it serves as the western terminus of the Cimarron Turnpike Spur.

Located at the corner of Hawthorne Boulevard and Silver Spur Road, Peninsula High serves the communities of Rolling Hills Estates, Rolling Hills, Rancho Palos Verdes and Palos Verdes Estates.

The West Saint John Spur serves the west side of the Port of Saint John, including the Rodney Container Terminal, the Forest Products Terminal ( FORTERM ), and several industrial customers.

Currently the Spur / NLE exit serves as the connection between the expressway and the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway

Another abandoned spur in Torrance, the Alcoa Spur, still connects to the main just west of the end of Del Amo Boulevard, parallels Del Amo on its way across Crenshaw and continues east where it once served heavy industries with ExxonMobil products on Del Amo Boulevard and Western Avenue.

In Cornwall, the track was relaid from the Canadian National Railway main line to what was once Cornwall Junction in 1971 as the Wesco Spur.

Spur Route 106 connects the main highway with Deer Run State Forest.

After this interchange, the road comes to a crossroads with Route 73, which is signed as County Route 561 Spur.

The major county road is Route 551 Spur.

South of the interchange with the Atlantic City Expressway in Winslow Township, Camden County, Route 73 is a two-lane undivided county-maintained road and is signed as County Route 561 Spur, a spur of County Route 561 ( CR 561 ).

Route 73 begins at an intersection with U. S. Route 322 ( Black Horse Pike ) in Folsom, Atlantic County, heading to the northwest on Blue Anchor Road, a two-lane undivided county-maintained road signed as County Route 561 Spur.

From here, the road continues through commercial areas, crossing County Route 632 ( Bridge Avenue ) before heading east and intersecting County Route 549 Spur ( Herbertsville Road ) and County Route 630 ( Beaver Dam Road ).

Past the pond, CR 550 Spur splits from the road, which continues west-northwest.

Spur I-195 was the surface portion of the east – west state road along Arthur Godfrey Boulevard in Miami Beach, connecting I-195 and SR A1A east of the causeway.

The Spur I-195 signs disappeared from the road shortly after the designation was decommissioned by the newly formed United States Department of Transportation in the late 1960s.

Part of the Upton Park site is now the Moreton Spur road, connected to the M53 motorway.

From North to South the road houses the Destinata School for Special Learning, The Meyerton Golf Club, The newly revamped SASOL Service station, Auto Clinic Car Sales ( est 1969 ), The newly renovated Cancoon Spur, The Three Oakes Shopping Centre, Montaques Wine Bar, Hand in Hand Nursery School, The local High School DR MALAN followed by Midvaal's own Massive Industrial hub called Sybrand van Niekerk Park.

It crosses the M50 Ross Spur motorway at junction 2, then meets the Ledbury bypass, where the road noticeably widens out, and has many large roundabouts.

SR 302 Spur is the legislative designation of this road.

Spur Route 240 connects the road with Rocheport.

138 mainline, still anachronistically refer to the road as " Spur 138 ".

Just north of White Rock Lake, it intersects Spur 244 and becomes Northwest Highway to the west ; because there is an eastern and a western segment to this part of the road, at certain points the road signs read " East Northwest Highway.

This difficult portion of the road was used by thousands of vehicles from 1848 to 1863, when a better route was blasted out of the face of the cliff at Carson Spur ( the present highway route ).

The road was later extended through the Carson Spur around the north shore of Silver Lake, and southwest to Jackson ( California State Route 88 through the pass uses this southern route ).
