St Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologica, II: II Quaestio 25, Article 4 states that we should love our neighbour more than our ourselves.

St Thomas interprets ' You should love your neighbour as yourself ' from Leviticus 19 and Matthew 22 as meaning that love for ourselves is the exemplar of love for others.

The oldest-surviving Anglican church outside of the British Isles ( Britain and Ireland ) is St Peter's Church in St. George's, Bermuda, established in 1612 ( though the actual building had to be rebuilt several times over the following century ).

During this period winter sports were slowly introduced: in 1882 the first figure skating championship was held in St. Moritz, and downhill skiing became a trendy sport with English visitors early in the 20th century, as the first ski-lift was installed in 1908 above Grindelwald.

In the first half of the 20th century the Olympic Winter Games were held three times in Alpine venues: the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France ; the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland ; and the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

During World II the winter games were canceled but after that time the Winter Games have been held in St. Moritz ( 1948 ), Innsbruck, Austria ( 1964 and 1976 ), Grenoble, France, ( 1968 ), Albertville, France, ( 1992 ), and Torino, Italy, ( 2006 ).

In 1592 he also painted the Communion of St. Jerome, now in the Pinacoteca di Bologna and considered his masterwork.

It has with a Baroque portal ( 1667 ), a noteworthy bell tower, presbytery frescoes portraying the Histories of St. Peter and Virgin by Jacopo da Montagnana ( 1495 ) and Palma the Younger's altarpiece depicting Christ Crucifixed Between St. Augustine and St. Jerome.

St. Jerome differed with St. Augustine in his Latin translation of the plant known in Hebrew as קיקיון ( qiyqayown ), using Hedera ( from the Greek, meaning ivy ) over the more common Latin cucurbita from which the related English plant name cucumber is derived.

St. Jerome suggests this may be because Ezra is seen as an intermediary between the prophets and the ' great synagogue '.

It uses the older Gallican psalter of St. Jerome.

St. Jerome, in his letter Against Jovinianus, discusses how people come to their present condition as a result of their heritage, and then lists several examples of peoples and their customs.

Catullus came from a leading equestrian family of Verona in Cisalpine Gaul, and according to St. Jerome, he was born in the town.

St. Jerome says that he died in his 30th year, and was born in 87 BC.

According to the later St. Jerome, celibacy is a moral virtue, consisting of not living in the flesh but outside the flesh ( vivere in carne praeter carnem ).

A less common belief, contradicting allochtonic Slovene origin, was that the Glagolitic was created or used in the 4th century by St. Jerome, hence the alphabet is sometimes named Hieronymian.

In the Middle Ages, Glagolitsa was also known as " St. Jerome's script " due to popular mediaeval legend ( created by Croatian scribes in 13th century ) ascribing its invention to St Jerome ( 342-429 ).

However, it should be noted that the Latin Vulgate translation was a work that St. Jerome began in 382 AD, centuries after the death of Barnabas.

The Galatians were still speaking the Galatian language ( Gaulish ) in the time of St. Jerome ( 347 – 420 AD ), who wrote that the Galatians of Ancyra and the Treveri of Trier ( in what is now the German Rhineland ) spoke the same language ( Comentarii in Epistolam ad Galatos, 2. 3, composed c. 387 ).

In the latter he is known as St. Jerome of Stridonium or Blessed Jerome.

These followers, he says, are Constantinus, who succeeded Benedict as Abbot of Monte Cassino ; Valentinianus ; Simplicius ; and Honoratus, who was abbot of Subiaco when St Gregory wrote his Dialogues.

His works were so influential that late in the 9th century Notker the Stammerer, a monk of the Monastery of St. Gall in Switzerland, wrote that " God, the orderer of natures, who raised the Sun from the East on the fourth day of Creation, in the sixth day of the world has made Bede rise from the West as a new Sun to illuminate the whole Earth ".

St. Cyril, an eye-witness wrote immediately to the emperor Constantius, an exact account of this miraculous phenomenon: and his letter is quoted as a voucher for it by Sozomen, Theophanes, Eutychius, John of Nice, Glycas, and others.

" St. John Chrysostom wrote: "... virginity is better than marriage, however good .... Celibacy is ... an imitation of the angels.

From 1746, Hume served for three years as secretary to Lieutenant-General St Clair, and wrote Philosophical Essays Concerning Human Understanding, later published as An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding.

The famed apologist St. Justin Martyr ( c. 150 ) wrote: " No one else is permitted to partake of it, except one who believes our teaching to be true ...." For the first several hundred years, non-members were forbidden even to be present at the sacramental ritual ; visitors and catechumens ( those still undergoing instruction ) were dismissed halfway through the Liturgy, after the Bible readings and sermon but before the Eucharistic rite.

He also wrote St Thomas of Canterbury, his Death and Miracles ( 1898 ), Johannine Vocabulary ( 1905 ), Johannine Grammar ( 1906 ).

In 1880, Sullivan wrote the cantata The Martyr of Antioch, presented at the Leeds Triennial Music Festival, with a libretto modified by Gilbert from an 1822 epic poem by Henry Hart Milman concerning the martyrdom of St. Margaret of Antioch in the 3rd century.

He appointed a commission that set aside 3, 000, 000 acres ( 12, 000 km² ) of national parks and 2, 300, 000 acres of national forests ; advocated tax reduction for low-income Americans ( not enacted ); closed certain tax loopholes for the wealthy ; doubled the number of veterans ' hospital facilities ; negotiated a treaty on St. Lawrence Seaway ( which failed in the U. S. Senate ); wrote a Children's Charter that advocated protection of every child regardless of race or gender ; created an antitrust division in the Justice Department ; required air mail carriers to adopt stricter safety measures and improve service ; proposed federal loans for urban slum clearances ( not enacted ); organized the Federal Bureau of Prisons ; reorganized the Bureau of Indian Affairs ; instituted prison reform ; proposed a federal Department of Education ( not enacted ); advocated $ 50-per-month pensions for Americans over 65 ( not enacted ); chaired White House conferences on child health, protection, homebuilding and home-ownership ; began construction of the Boulder Dam ( later renamed Hoover Dam ); and signed the Norris – La Guardia Act that limited judicial intervention in labor disputes.

St Gregory defended hesychasm in the 1340s at three different synods in Constantinople, and he also wrote a number of works in its defense.

Reynolds wrote to Jonathan Shipley, Bishop of St Asaph, a few weeks later: " Your Lordship congratulation on my succeeding Mr. Ramsay I take very kindly but it is a most miserable office, it is reduced from two hundred to thirty-eight pounds per annum, the Kings Rat catcher I believe is a better place, and I am to be paid only a fourth part of what I have from other people, so that the Portraits of their Majesties are not likely to be better done now, than they used to be, I should be ruined if I was to paint them myself ".

After being inspired by a poster featuring a local, Hollywood burlesque performer Virginia Lee Hicks, who was then performing as Jennie Lee, the " Bazoom Girl ", at the New Follies Burlesk at 548 S. Main St, Los Angeles, Ginsburg wrote a tribute song " Jennie Lee " that he brought to Berry and Torrence.

Potiti (" Life of St. Potitus ", 1433 ), De iure ( On Law, 1437 ), Theogenius (" The Origin of the Gods ", c. 1440 ), Profugorium ab aerumna (" Refuge from Mental Anguish ",), Momus ( 1450 ) and De Iciarchia (" On the Prince ", 1468 ). These and other works were translated and printed in Venice by the humanist Cosimo Bartoli in 1586.

Originally a Cossack born in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Russian Turkestan ( now Kazakhstan ) in a family of Cossack Chorąży and his wife of kazakh origin, Kornilov entered military school in Omsk in 1885 and went on to study at the Mikhailovsky Artillery School in St. Petersburg in 1889. in August 1892, he was assigned as a lieutenant to the Turkestan Military District, where he led several exploration missions in Eastern Turkestan, Afghanistan and Persia, learned several Central Asian languages, and wrote detailed reports about his observations.

St. Augustine of Hippo ( A. D. 354 – 430 ) wrote " Numbers are the Universal language offered by the deity to humans as confirmation of the truth.

St. Augustine wrote about periodic abstinence to avoid pregnancy in the year 388 ( the Manichaeans attempted to use this method to remain childfree, and Augustine condemned their use of periodic abstinence ).

St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote shortly after Clement and in his letter from the city of Smyrna to the Romans he said he would not command them as Peter and Paul did.

The earliest original writings in Coptic language were the letters by St. Anthony of Egypt, first of the “ Desert Fathers .” During the 3rd and 4th centuries many ecclesiastics and monks wrote in Coptic, among them, St. Pachomius, whose monastic rule ( the first cenobitic rule, for solitary monks gathered in communities ) survives only in Coptic.
