Stereo 8, commonly known as the eight-track cartridge, eight-track tape, or simply eight-track, is a magnetic tape sound recording technology.

Stereo 8 was released in 1965.

The Lear Jet Stereo 8 track cartridge was designed by Richard Kraus while working under Bill Lear and for his Lear Jet Corporation in 1963.

The Stereo 8 version doubled the amount of programming on the tape by providing eight total tracks, usually comprising four programs of two tracks each.

Unlike the Stereo-Pak, the Stereo 8 could switch between tracks automatically, with the use of a small length of conductive foil at the splice joint on the tape, which would cause the player to change tracks as it passed the head assembly.

The Stereo 8 also introduced the problem of dividing up the programming intended for a two-sided LP record into four programs.

In 1964, Lear's aircraft company constructed 100 demonstration Stereo 8 players for distribution to executives at RCA and the auto companies.

That, combined with the inherent deficiencies of the Stereo 8 format, contributed to its decline.

The Stereo 8 system was fairly simple, mechanically, but presented difficulties in two primary areas:

In September 1965, RCA and Lear Jet Corp. teamed up to release the first stereo 8-track tape music Cartridges ( Stereo 8 ) which were first used in the 1966 line of Ford automobiles and were popular throughout the late 1960s and 1970s.

4-track was the direct predecessor of the Stereo 8 cartridge, also known as the " 8-track ", later developed by American inventor Bill Lear.

However, he soon decided to re-engineer and customize the units to suit his own wishes, the result of which became the Stereo 8 system.

The market for Muntz's 4-track system had faded by 1970 due to competition from Stereo 8, which reduced costs by using less magnetic tape and a less-complex cartridge mechanism.

Lear developed the Lear Jet Stereo 8 music cartridge in 1964, better-known as the " 8-track ".

The consumer version of players for these tapes first appeared in September 1965 in 1966 model Ford automobiles with RCA and Lear offering the first pre-recorded Stereo 8 Music Cartridges.

The threshold concept was discussed by Murray G. Crosby ( inventor of Crosby system for FM Stereo ) who pointed out that for wide band FM to provide better signal to noise ratio, the signal should be above a certain threshold, according to his paper published in Proceedings of the IRE in 1937.

Dolby Stereo 70 mm Six Track was a six channel film sound format introduced in 1976 that used two subwoofer channels for stereo reproduction of low frequencies.
