A low ridge runs parallel to the lakeshore, ending at Great How above the dam, and this once diverted Stybarrow Dodd's drainage north to the Vale of St John.

Stybarrow Dodd's northern boundary on this face is Deepdale, this long and marshy valley separating it from Great Dodd since Watson's Dodd has no footing on the eastern side of the ridge.

To the south of the terminus at Clough Head are Great Dodd, Watson's Dodd and Stybarrow Dodd-collectively ' The Dodds '- before the scenery becomes gradually wilder on the approach to Helvellyn itself.

This ridge continues north over Helvellyn Lower Man, White Side, Raise, Stybarrow Dodd, Great Dodd and Clough Head, and south leads to Nethermost Pike and Dollywaggon Pike.

The stream which flows over the waterfall is Aira Beck, which rises on the upper slopes of Stybarrow Dodd at a height of and flows north-easterly before turning south, blocked by the high heather-covered slopes of Gowbarrow Fell.

Raise is near the centre of this ridge, with Stybarrow Dodd to the north and White Side to the south.

To the north, beyond the pass, the ground rises again to Stybarrow Dodd and all here is grass.

The eastern side of Stybarrow Dodd is more complex with a ridge running down to Dockray and the popular Aira Force waterfall.
