Swami Muktananda ( 16 May 1908 – 2 October 1982 ) is the monastic name of an Indian Hindu guru and disciple of Bhagavan Nityananda.

Swami Muktananda was the founder of Siddha Yoga.

He studied under Siddharudha Swami at Hubli, where he learned Sanskrit, Vedanta and all branches of yoga, and took the initiation of sannyasa, becoming Swami Muktananda.

Swami Muktananda often said that his spiritual journey didn't truly begin until he received shaktipat from the holy man Bhagavan Nityananda.

In 1966, Swami Nityananda gave Muktananda a small piece of land at Ganeshpuri, near Bombay on which Muktananda developed an ashram.

Swami Muktananda extended the ancient tradition of shaktipat initiation by bestowing spiritual initiation on tens of thousands of people throughout India and other countries.

In May 1982, Swami Muktananda installed Ms. Shetty ( now known as Gurumayi Chidvilasananda or Gurumayi ) and her brother Subhash Shetty ( now known as Mahamandaleshwar Nityananda ) as co-Gurus and spiritual leaders of Siddha Yoga.

Swami Muktananda died on October 2, 1982.

Swami Chidvilasananda has expanded the philanthropic work initiated by Swami Muktananda.

The SYDA Foundation, which is dedicated to protecting, preserving, and disseminating the Siddha Yoga teachings, offers a variety of courses and retreats throughout the year, including the meditation intensives first developed by Swami Muktananda in the 1970s.

Stating that " Paramahansa Yogananda was sent to the West by Jesus Christ himself " with the said intent to " restore the original Christian teachings among his followers ", in Revelations of Christ Swami Kriyananda, Yogananda's disciple and Ex-minister of the Self-Realization Fellowship, provides a distilled commentary on the life and teachings of Christ, all of which is meant to serve as an anticipatory primer to Yogananda's more philosophically nuanced treatment in The Second Coming of Christ.

According to A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Harā refers to " the energy of God " while Krishna and Rama refer to God himself, meaning " He who is All-Attractive " and " He who is the Source of All Pleasure ".

Yogananda, a disciple of Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri who was himself a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya, then brought Kriya Yoga to the United States and Europe during the 20th century.

According to Jain traditions, it was on this day, falling at the beginning of chaturmas, the four month rainy season retreat, Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, after attaining Kaivalya, made Indrabhuti Gautam, later known as Gautam Swami, a Ganadhara, his first disciple, thus becoming a Guru himself, therefore it is observed in Jainism as Guru Purnima, and is marked special veneration to one's Gurus and teachers.

In the 20th century Swami Lakshmanjoo, himself a Kashmiri Brahmin, helped revive both the scholarly and yogic streams of Kashmir Shaivism.

While a few sources say that he worked in a factory for some time most report that in 1941, he became an administrative secretary to the Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati ( also known as Guru Dev ) and took a new name, Bal Brahmachari Mahesh.

Swami Muktananda's spiritual teacher, Bhagawan Nityananda, has been widely regarded throughout India as a Siddha Guru and as an Avadhut since the mid-20th century.
