Syme's main conclusion was that the structure of the Republic and its Senate were inadequate for the needs of Roman rule ; Augustus was merely doing what was necessary to restore order in public life, but was a dictatorial figure whose true nature was cloaked by the panegyrics written to honor him in his last years and after his death.

Syme's conclusion of inevitability is less strongly supported than his elucidation of the takeover process, since at each point we see that Augustus is exercising his free choice, albeit for what he sees as the good of his country.

Maurice Bowra said in 1939 of Syme's The Roman Revolution " His work is extraordinarily persuasive and interesting ... the best book on Roman history that has appeared for many years ".

Broughton does not record a plebeian tribunate for Volusenus in The Magistrates of the Roman Republic, confirming only that Volusenus was a military tribune in 56 and held the rank of praefectus equitum in 52 – 51 and again in 48 .< ref > Broughton reassessed Volusenus's career in light of Syme's observations ( see above ) for the publication of volume 3 of The Magistrates of the Roman Republic ( Atlanta: Scholars Press, 1984 ), p. 224.

His earlier work focussed on the later Roman Republic, and culminated in The Last Generation of the Roman Republic, a work often cited as a response to Ronald Syme's The Roman Revolution.

Syme's mother told police her daughter was seeking treatment for back pain and depression just a few days prior to her death.

Syme's techniques and interpretations altered forever the understanding of this period.

Syme's accession to the clinical chair was marked by two important changes in the conditions of it: the first was that the professor should have the care of surgical patients in the infirmary in right of his professorship, and the second, that attendance on his course should be obligatory on all candidates for the medical degree.

Syme's character is not inaptly summed up in the dedication to him by his old pupil, Dr John Brown, of the series of essays Locke and Sydenham: Verax, capax, perspicax, sagax, efficax, tenax.

Syme's daughter Agnes married Joseph Lister, who in 1854 had been appointed first assistant surgeon to Syme at the University of Edinburgh.

The main competitor over the life of the newspaper was David Syme's more liberal-minded The Age newspaper.
