SystemC version 1 included common hardware-description language features such as structural hierarchy and connectivity, clock-cycle accuracy, delta cycles, 4-state logic ( 0, 1, X, Z ), and bus-resolution functions.

From version 2 onward, the focus of SystemC has moved to communication abstraction, transaction-level modeling, and virtual-platform modeling.

A SystemC model usually consists of several modules which communicate via ports.

SystemC processes can communicate in a simulated real-time environment, using signals of all the datatypes offered by C ++, some additional ones offered by the SystemC library, as well as user defined.

SystemC is a set of C ++ classes and macros which provide an event-driven simulation kernel in C ++ ( see also discrete event simulation ).

The high level of abstraction of SystemC models is well suited to early architecture exploration, as architectural modifications can be easily evaluated with little concern for signal-level implementation issues.

However, the threading model used in SystemC and its reliance on shared memory mean that it does not handle parallel execution or lower level models well.

Companies such as Cadence, Synopsys and Agility Design Solutions are promoting SystemC as a way to combine high level languages with concurrency models to allow faster design cycles for FPGAs than is possible using traditional HDLs.

With the growing complexity of chips, hardware verification languages like SystemVerilog, SystemC, e, and OpenVera are being used.

Products include logic synthesis, behavioral synthesis, place and route, static timing analysis, formal verification, HDL ( SystemC, SystemVerilog / Verilog, VHDL ) simulators as well as transistor-level circuit simulation.

The cores are implemented in the hardware description languages Verilog, VHDL or SystemC which may be synthesized to either silicon or gate arrays.

In December 2011 Accellera and Open SystemC Initiative ( OSCI ) approve their merger adopting the name Accellera Systems Initiative.

In certain respects, SystemC deliberately mimics the hardware description languages VHDL and Verilog, but is more aptly described as a system-level modeling language.

Although strictly a C ++ class library, SystemC is sometimes viewed as being a language in its own right.
