Campanella wrote his first work, Philosophia sensibus demonstrata (" Philosophy demonstrated by the senses "), published in 1592, in defence of Telesio.

Bacon himself acknowledges Telesio as being " the first of the moderns " ( De Telesio autem bene sentimus, atque eum ut amantem veritatis, & Scientiis utilem, & nonnullorum Placitorum emendatorem & novorum hominum primum agnoscimus., from Bacon's De principiis atque originibus ) for putting observation above all other methods for acquiring knowledge about the natural world.

Early on, he became disenchanted with the Aristotelian orthodoxy and attracted by the empiricism of Bernardino Telesio ( 1509 – 1588 ), who taught that knowledge is sensation and that all things in nature possess sensation.

This cosmic theory is a curious combination of materialistic and abstract ideas ; the influence of his master Bernardino Telesio, generally predominant, is not strong enough to overcome his inherent disbelief in the adequacy of purely scientific explanation.

The whole system of Telesio shows lacunae in argument, and ignorance of essential facts, but at the same time it is a forerunner of all subsequent empiricism, scientific and philosophical, and marks clearly the period of transition from authority and reason to experiment and individual responsibility.

For Telesio, observation ( sensu percipiendam ) is a much larger mental process than simply recording data, observation also includes analogical thought.

Among natural philosophers from the Renaissance, this honor is generally bestowed upon Telesio.

This frequently quoted phrase from Bacon, though, is misleading, for it oversimplifies and misrepresents Bacon ’ s opinion of Telesio.

Most of Bacon's essay is an attack on Telesio and this phrase, invariably taken out of context, has facilitated a general misconception of Telesian natural philosophy by giving to it a Baconian stamp of approval, which was far from Bacon ’ s original intentions.

Telesio can be seen as a Stoic, an Epicurean, a Parmenidian, and even though he resists the ideas of Aristotle with vigor, his overall theory is quite Aristotelian.

Whilst the political and social conditions in Italy in the 17th century made it appear that every light of intelligence was extinguished, some strong and independent thinkers, such as Bernardino Telesio, Lucilio Vanini, Bruno and Campanella turned philosophical inquiry into fresh channels, and opened the way for the scientific conquests of Galileo Galilei, the great contemporary of René Descartes in France and of Francis Bacon in England.

Telesio clearly strives to explain everything in terms of matter informed by hot and cold and to keep his arguments as simple as possible.

Telesio was the head of the great Southern Italian movement which protested against the accepted authority of abstract reason, and sowed the seeds from which sprang the scientific methods of Tommaso Campanella and Giordano Bruno, of Francis Bacon and René Descartes, with their widely divergent results.

It was a cultural powerhouse during the Baroque era as home to artists including Caravaggio, Rosa and Bernini, philosophers such as Telesio, Bruno, Campanella and Vico, and writers such as Battista Marino.

Bernardino Telesio () ( 1509 – 2 October 1588 ) was an Italian philosopher and natural scientist.

Telesio was born of noble parentage in Cosenza, a city in Calabria, Southern Italy.

When Telesio went on to explain the relation of mind and matter, he was still more heterodox.

Telesio, on the other hand, began from an Aristotelian basis and, through radical empiricism, came to believe that a living force was what informed all matter.

Under fascism anti-Semitism was associated with such politicians and writers Paolo Orano, Roberto Farinacci, Telesio Interlandi and Giovanni Preziosi although, initially at least, Jews took part to set up and were permitted to join the National Fascist Party and a handful, notably Aldo Finzi, gained a high profile until the 1938 racial laws.
