That same year, Phil also participated on Randy Stonehill's Edge of the World album, singing a duet " That's the Way It Goes " as well as appearing on " We Were All So Young " with other veteran musicians such as Larry Norman.

Nilsson's voice had mostly recovered by his next release, Duit on Mon Dei ( 1975 ), but neither it nor its follow-ups, Sandman and ... That's the Way It Is ( both 1976 ) met with chart success.

However, Gaye felt the success was something he " didn't deserve " and that he " felt like a puppet -- Berry's puppet, Anna's puppet ..." Gaye followed it with songs such as " Too Busy Thinking About My Baby " and " That's the Way Love Is ", which reached the top-ten on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969.

Later on as his Motown career developed, Gaye would seek inspiration in fellow label mates such as David Ruffin of The Temptations and Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops as their grittier voices led to Gaye and his producer seeking a similar sound in recordings such as " I Heard It Through the Grapevine " and " That's the Way Love Is ".

Similarly, M was a one-hit wonder in the U. S. with the 1979 # 1 pop hit " Pop Muzik ," but in the UK, where the original " Pop Muzik " hit # 2, the improbably titled " Moonlight & Muzak " made it to # 33, a re-mix of " Pop Muzik " hit # 15 in 1989 and two other singles (" That's the Way the Money Goes " and " Official Secrets ") charted, albeit missing the UK top 40.

" However, they did have an oft-overlooked second hit that cracked the U. S. top 20 four years later, with " That's the Way " reaching number 16.

In 1994, the group recorded its first album in 17 years, called That's the Way It Should Be.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, the band had many hits, including " Shining Star ", " That's the Way of the World ", " Devotion ", " Reasons ", " Sing a Song ", " Can't Hide Love ", " Getaway ", " Fantasy ", " Love's Holiday ", " September ", " Boogie Wonderland ", " After the Love Has Gone ", and " Let's Groove ".

In 1975, Earth, Wind & Fire was approached by Sig Shore, producer of the motion picture Super Fly, to record the soundtrack to new film about the dark side of the recording industry called That's The Way Of The World.

To avoid being connected with the movie they released the album's soundtrack, also entitled That's the Way of the World, before its premiere.

Recorded at the Caribou Ranch Studio and co-produced by Maurice White and Charles Stepney That's the Way of the World became Earth, Wind & Fire's breakthrough album, spending three weeks at number one on the Billboard Pop Albums Charts, five nonconsecutive weeks atop the Soul Albums chart.

That's the Way of the World was also warmly received critically.

Included on the album were the hit singles " Shining Star " – which rose to number one on the R & B Singles and Billboard Hot 100 and won the band a Grammy Award for Best R & B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals – and " That's the Way of the World ", which went to number five and number 12 on the R & B Singles and Billboard Hot 100, respectively.

January 1979 saw the band performing " September " and " That's The Way Of The World " at the Music for UNICEF Concert, which was broadcast worldwide from the United Nations General Assembly by NBC.

All of the band's original members from the 1973 — 80 " classic period ", namely Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Ralph Johnson, Al McKay, Larry Dunn, Andrew Woofolk, Fred White and Johnny Graham, attended the ceremony, at which the nine of them played together for the first time in 20 years, performing " Shining Star " and " That's The Way Of the World ".

Four other hits from the album made the Pop top 20: " Every Heartbeat " ( No. 2 ), " That's What Love Is For " ( No. 7 ), " Good For Me " ( No. 8 ), and " I Will Remember You " ( No. 20 ).

On the Adult Contemporary chart, all five songs were top 10 hits, with two of the five (" Baby Baby " and " That's What Love Is For ") reaching No. 1.

In 1981, Art Garfunkel recorded " Scissors Cut ", " In Cars ", and " That's All I've Got to Say " for his album Scissors Cut, and Arlo Guthrie recorded " Oklahoma Nights " on his album Power of Love.

The output of Oscar-winning songwriter / composer Randy Newman also includes several songs expressing dystheistic sentiment, including the ironic " He Gives Us All His Love " and the more overtly maltheistic " God's Song ( That's Why I Love Mankind )", both from his acclaimed 1972 album Sail Away.

Gore's first hit was followed by many others, including: " Judy's Turn to Cry " ( US # 5 ), the sequel to " It's My Party "; " She's a Fool " ( US # 5 ); the protofeminist million-selling " You Don't Own Me ", which held at # 2 for three weeks behind The Beatles ' " I Want To Hold Your Hand "; " That's the Way Boys Are " ( US # 12 ); " Maybe I Know " ( US # 14 / UK # 20 ); " Look of Love " ( US # 27 ); and Grammy-nominated " Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows " ( US # 13 ), from the 1965 movie " Ski Party ".

He continued to do a number of sessions during this period, and in 1983 he co-produced and played on Jim Capaldi's top 40 hit " That's Love " and co-wrote the Will Powers top 20 hit " Kissing with Confidence ".
