Thayer had teamed with a friend from Harvard, James Sibley Watson, Jr., to buy The Dial late in 1919.

Similar to Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, California, Thayer Street hosts independent shops and restaurants that serve as a communal center for students and locals.

While Harvard Square has long been controlled by chain restaurants and stores, many businesses on Thayer remain independent, such as Avon Cinema, Blue State Coffee, Rockstar Body Piercing, East Side Pockets, and NAVA-New And Vintage Apparel with certain notable exceptions such as Johnny Rockets, Starbucks, Au Bon Pain, Urban Outfitters, Chipotle, and CVS Pharmacy.

His Harvard years would prove formative ; during them Thayer would serve on the staff of the Harvard Monthly.

A large dormitory for freshmen at Harvard, in which E. E. Cummings once roomed ( room 306 ), is named after the Thayer family.

In late 1919, Thayer and his fellow Harvard alumnus Dr. James Sibley Watson, Jr. purchased The Dial from the owner, Martyn Johnson, who was experiencing financial trouble.
