The African National Congress ( ANC ) is South Africa's governing political party, supported by its tripartite alliance with the Congress of South African Trade Unions ( COSATU ) and the South African Communist Party ( SACP ), since the establishment of non-racial democracy in April 1994.

The ANC is a member of the Socialist International.

The ANC is the ruling party in the national legislature, as well as in eight of the nine provinces, having received 65. 9 % of the vote during the 2009 general election and 62. 9 %

Govan Mbeki had come to the rural Eastern Cape as a political activist after earning two university degrees ; he urged his family to make the ANC their family, and of his children, Thabo Mbeki is the one who most clearly followed that instruction, joining the party at age 14 and devoting his life to it thereafter.

A controversial activist, she is popular among her supporters, who refer to her as the ' Mother of the Nation ', yet reviled by others, mostly due to her alleged involvement in several human rights abuses, including the 1988 kidnapping of 14-year old ANC activist Stompie Moeketsi, who was later murdered.

However, through the Tripartite Alliance and the sitting of many SACP members on the ANC's NEC, the SACP has wielded influence from within the ANC, often serving as an ideological opposition against the presidency and socio-economic policies of Thabo Mbeki ( 1999 – 2008 ); this became most apparent with the ouster of Mbeki from the presidencies of both the party ( 2007, by vote ) and the government ( 2008, by ANC party recall ) and his eventual replacement in both offices with Jacob Zuma, who is widely seen as being more conciliatory to the ideological demands of both the SACP and COSATU.

: As of early 2006, the ANC government announced that it will start expropriating the land, although according to the country's chief land-claims commissioner, Tozi Gwanya, unlike Zimbabwe there will be compensation to those whose land is expropriated, " but it must be a just amount, not inflated sums.

Shaikh was very involved in the Muslim Forum on Elections – a coalition of Muslim organisations that was calling on the community to vote in South Africa ’ s first democratic elections in April 1994, and to vote for those parties " that had formerly been part of the liberation movement " – in particular, the African National Congress ( ANC ) and the Pan Africanist Congress ( PAC ).
