In the ensuing general elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) emerged as the single largest party, leading the largest pre-election coalition, the National Democratic Alliance ( NDA ), and the coalition leader Vajpayee staked his claim to form the government, though at that point he did not have a majority.

This did not sit well with the RSS either and Advani was forced to relinquish his post as BJP president.

In the 2009 elections, GNLF was out of power in the hills and did not field any candidate or support any party and the Lok Sabha seat was won by Jaswant Singh of BJP with the support from GJMM.

The Left Front ( under E. M. S. Namboodiripad and Indrajit Gupta ) and the BJP ( under L. K. Advani ) declined to serve in the government, preferring to support it from outside.

Mayawati then sought the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) to become Chief Minister on June 3, 1995.

After a one-and-a-half year stint, the BJP pulled out of the government on August 25, 2003, and enough rebel legislators of the Bahujan Samaj Party left to allow Mulayam to become the Chief Minister, with the support of independents and small parties.

Since the population of Punjab is about 60 % Sikh and 37 % Hindu, the Akali Dal needs the support of as many Hindus as the BJP can get to form lasting administrations, and the BJP needs the SAD to bring as many parliamentary seats from Punjab as it can to form a Union government.
