The diesel models employed the XUD PSA Diesel inline-four engine, lifted from the Citroën BX which was introduced in 1982.

Winning many Towcar of the Year awards, the BX was renowned as a tow car ( as was its larger sister, the CX ), especially the diesel models, due to their power and economy combined with the self levelling suspension.

The diesel saloon even won a CAR magazine ' giant test ' against the Citroën BX ( 1. 8 XUDT ), the then new Peugeot 405 ( 1. 8 XUDT ) and Audi 80 ( 1. 6 ) turbo diesels.

It was, along with the larger ( also XUD powered ) Citroën BX, the beginning of the start of the boom in diesel sales in Europe.

The Australian letter to number mapping was: A = 1, B = 2, F = 3, J = 4, L = 5, M = 6, U = 7, W = 8, X = 9, Y = 0, so the phone number BX 3701 was in fact 29 3701.

It was a strong competitor for other rivals of the early 1980s, including the Talbot Alpine, Peugeot 505 and Morris Ital and the Citroën BX, but later in its life it had to compete with the Austin Montego ( 1984 ), Peugeot 405 ( 1987 ) and Opel Vectra ( 1988 ).

It was part of a ' between sizes ' policy that Citroën also followed with the BX.

It kept the original interior and " PRN Satellite " controls until 1985 when, along with the Citroën BX, it was updated with a new bulkier dashboard, instruments and switchgear that made the car feel smaller inside.

Even though it received a favourable review by CAR magazine who felt it was a better performance / economy compromise than the 11RE, it wasn't very successful, due to being squeezed by the Visa Diesel and the extremely competitively priced BX 14.

A light van using the front of the Visa, along with a conventionally sprung version of the Citroën BX rear suspension, was also produced-the Citroën C15.

The Citroën BX is a large family car that was produced by the French manufacturer Citroën from 1982 to 1994.

The Citroën BX was launched in Paris on 2 October 1982 under the Eiffel Tower.

The BX was designed to replace the successful small family car Citroën GS / A with a larger vehicle.

The BX dispensed of the air cooled, flat four engine which powered the GS, and replaced it with the new PSA group XY, TU and XU series of petrol engines in 1. 4 L, 1. 6 L and 1. 9 L displacements ( a 1. 1 L engine, very unusual in a car of this size, was also available in Italy, Portugal and Greece ).

In 1986 the MK2 BX was launched.

1988 saw the launch of the BX Turbo Diesel, which was praised by the motoring press.

The biggest problem of the BX was its variable build quality, compared to its competition.

The last BX was made in 1994, by which time its successors had already been launched.

Rated at and equipped with dual 2-barrel carburettors, the BX Sport was the most powerful BX in production at that time.

The BX GT was launched in 1985 and featured a 1. 9 L Peugeot-sourced engine, in general a Sport engine with only one twin choke carburettor.

That same year, Citroën produced a " Digit " model, which was based on the BX GT.

The specially designed rally BX was called the BX 4TC and bore little resemblance to the standard BX.

Five trailers were originally set up in this manner, but the arrangement was not found to be satisfactory, and they were ultimately coupled into BX units as the rest of the trailers already had been.

A DOHC twin-exhaust port cylinder head, based on that of the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 Group B rally car was bolted to an uprated version of the 1905cc XU9 8v alloy engine block as fitted to the BX GTi and Peugeot 205 GTi.

An uprated version of the BX GT, the BX19 GTi was fitted with an 1. 9 L eight-valve fuel injected engine producing ( this engine also fitted to the Peugeot 405 SRi, and being very similar to the engine also fitted to the 205 GTi, however the BX19 GTi and Peugeot 405 SRi used a different inlet manifold and cylinder head to the Peugeot 205 GTi ,), a spoiler and firmer suspension spheres / anti-roll bar than the standard model ; it could reach 198 km / h.

Still based on the BX platform, it was very different from the earlier model, with an updated body and longer wheelbase than the 1980 original.

The Xantia replaced the earlier Citroën BX and maintained the high level of popularity of that model, but brought the car more into the mainstream to compete harder with its rivals such as the Ford Mondeo, Nissan Primera, Rover 400, Toyota Carina E and Vauxhall Cavalier.

In 1989, the BX range had further minor revisions and specification improvements made to it, including smoked rear lamp units, new wheeltrims and interior fabrics.

Successor of Gol GT, the GTS had an updated design, following the new 87 BX line up style and also featuring new accessories that were not available before, such as rear spoiler and side skirts.

: A new system of BX and XB convoys was initiated between Halifax and Boston, to counter the U-boat campaign along the East coast of the USA.

By the time the last few locomotives were under construction dual braking had become the norm and ten of the last batch from Derby were built new as 25 / 3 BX locomotives for work out of Willesden on the recently upgraded West Coast Main Line.

Diesel Car magazine said of the BX " We can think of no other car currently on sale in the UK that comes anywhere near approaching the BX Turbo's combination of performance, accommodation and economy ".

Citroën was ashamed of the performance of its cars, and immediately recalled and scrapped as many examples as it could, making the BX 4TC road and race cars extremely rare and sought-after.

The BX had tried to address the small family car market and the large family car market by being ' between sizes ' but well packaged.

The Gol GT 1. 8 was the BX family's first sports version and an answer to the Ford Escort XR3, a successful sports car in Brazilian market.

The remaining military activity consists of Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento, operating HC-130 Hercules aircraft, as well as an AAFES BX, a commissary and VA Outpatient Clinic VA Hospital which are primarily utilized by Coast Guard personnel, military retirees and National Guard and Reserve personnel, and their immediate families / dependents in the Sacramento area.

There was once a siding to Marsh Farm, where fresh fruit and vegetables were loaded for London, and a siding going into the old BX Plastics factory ( now derelict ) for loading and unloading materials.
