BX and diesel
The diesel models employed the XUD PSA Diesel inline-four engine, lifted from the Citroën BX which was introduced in 1982.
Winning many Towcar of the Year awards, the BX was renowned as a tow car ( as was its larger sister, the CX ), especially the diesel models, due to their power and economy combined with the self levelling suspension.
The diesel saloon even won a CAR magazine ' giant test ' against the Citroën BX ( 1. 8 XUDT ), the then new Peugeot 405 ( 1. 8 XUDT ) and Audi 80 ( 1. 6 ) turbo diesels.
It was, along with the larger ( also XUD powered ) Citroën BX, the beginning of the start of the boom in diesel sales in Europe.
