The Ben Ish Chai by Yosef Chaim ( Baghdad, 1832 – 1909 ) is a corresponding Sephardi work.

Thus Mizrahi and Sephardi Jews may choose to follow the opinion of the Ben Ish Chai when it conflicts with the Shulchan Aruch.

The Shulchan Aruch HaRav is considered authoritative by other Hasidim, and citations to this work are many times found in non-Hasidic sources such as the Mishnah Berurah used by Lithuanian Jews and the Ben Ish Chai used by Sephardic Jews.

An important influence on Sephardic prayer and custom was the late 19th century Baghdadi rabbi known as the Ben Ish Ḥai, whose work of that name contained both halachic rulings and observations on Kabbalistic custom based on his correspondence with Eliyahu Mani of the Bet El yeshivah.

The rulings of the Ben Ish Ḥai have been accepted in several other Sephardic and Oriental communities, such as that of Jerba.

The work is broadly considered an authoritative halachic text, and its rulings are frequently cited by later authorities such as Yisrael Meir Kagan in his Mishnah Berurah and the Ben Ish Chai of Yosef Chaim of Baghdad, as well as in many contemporary responsa by leading halachic authorities of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The tension between the two Rabbis began in the 1940s, when Yosef came out openly against the Halachic rulings of the Ben Ish Chai.

Yosef's attitude towards the Kabbalah, the rulings of the Ari, and consequently the rulings of the Ben Ish Chai have been the cause of strong disagreements between him and Jewish immigrants from the Muslim world in Israel, especially the Jews of Iraq.

The rulings of the Ben Ish Chai were at the heart of the disagreement between him and the Chief Rabbis Yitzhak Nissim and Mordechai Eliyahu.

Among Yosef's earliest works was a detailed commentary on the Ben Ish Chai titled Halikhot Olam.

It could even be argued that they follow Caro more closely than any other group, as many other Sephardim, especially the eastern communities influenced by the Ben Ish Chai, regard Isaac Luria as having equal or even greater authority than Caro.

( It is thought that the title added to this book's immediate and continuing popularity: many other works – Ben Ish Hai, Chayei Adam and others – are also concise, and suitable for laypersons or summaries of the Shulchan Aruch but did not reach the level of the Kitzur's popularity.

He is best known as author of the work on Halakha Ben Ish Ḥai ( בן איש חי ) (" Son of Man ( who ) Lives "), by which title he is also colloquially known.

The Ben Ish Chai ( בן איש חי ) is a standard reference in Sephardi homes ( functioning as " a Sephardi Kitzur Shulchan Arukh ") and is widely studied in Sephardi yeshivot.

Due to the popularity of this book, Hakham Yosef Chaim came to be known as " Ben Ish Chai ", by which he is referred to by many today.
