Anglo-Saxon art developed a very sophisticated variety of contemporary Continental styles, seen especially in metalwork and illuminated manuscripts such as the Benedictional of St. Æthelwold.

Such a manuscript as the Benedictional of St. Æthelwold, bishop of Winchester, 963 to 984, with its series of miniatures drawn in the native style but painted in opaque pigments, exhibits the influence of the foreign art.

R. Deshman has argued that the drawings added to the Leofric Missal ( Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Bodley 579 ) in about 979 were influenced by the illuminations of the Benedictional of St. Æthelwold, meaning that the Benedictional was probably produced before 979.

The Benedictional of St. Æthelwold is a masterpiece of the later Winchester style, which drew on Insular, Carolingian, and Byzantine art to make a heavier and more grandiose style, where the broad classicising acanthus foliage sometimes seems over-luxuriant.

One is the so-called Missal of Robert of Jumièges, actually a sacramentary with thirteen surviving full-page miniatures, which bears an inscription apparently in Robert's own hand recording its donation to Jumièges when he was Bishop of London, and the other the so-called Benedictional of Archbishop Robert, actually a pontifical with three remaining full-page miniatures and other decoration ( respectively Rouen, Bibliothèque Municipale, Manuscripts Y. 6 and Y. 7 ).

It is assumed that the Benedictional remained at Winchester after Æthelwold's death.

The Benedictional was purchased by the British Library from the Duke's descendants.

The " hybrid " text found in the Æthelwold Benedictional is also found in the Ramsey Benedictional ( Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, MS lat.

It is not certain which of the manuscripts was the original, although A. J. Prescott has argued that the Ramsey Benedictional was written by Godeman, using instructions given to him by Æthelwold, to be sent elsewhere ; and that Æthelwold was so pleased with the result that he had another copy made for himself.

Æthelwold was certainly bishop during the period when the Winchester school of manuscript illumination reached its peak, and the most important surviving manuscript of the school, the Benedictional of Saint Æthelwold ( British Library ), was commissioned by him.

A further style of textile is a vestment illustrated in a miniature portrait of Saint Aethelwold in his Benedictional ( see above ), which shows the edge of what appears to be a huge acanthus " flower " ( a term used in several documentary records ) covering the wearer's back and shoulders.
